What is an Athletic Trainer?

Athletic Trainers (AT) are licensed health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.

Your Health & Safety

Before the season’s first practice, you must have:

• Valid Sports Physical examination within the past year AND a paper copy turned into the athletic department.

• Emergency Medical Authorization Form

• Extra Curricular Code of Conduct & Sportsmanship Guideline

• Ohio Department of Health Concussion Information Sheet

What to do when an injury occurs

• Report any/all Injuries to the Athletic Training Staff OR Coach in the

absence of the AT

• If a physician referral is needed the parent will be contacted ASAP by the Athletic Training Staff

• It is the athletes responsibility to report daily to the ATR for evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation until they are cleared to RTP

• Parents are encouraged to contact the medical staff with any questions or concerns related to their student-athletes care.

When your athlete needs to see a Physician

• The WSHS Sports Medicine Department DOES NOT replace the PCP

• Choice of Health Care Provider always remains at the discretion of

the parent/guardian.

• Our Team Physician is available to our student-athletes, if needed. Office appointments with our team physician guaranteed within 24-48 hours or during weekly scheduled training room visits, by appointment ONLY.

When Your Athlete is under the care of a Physician

If your athlete is under the direction of a Physician, outside of WSHS Sports Medicine Staff, for any injuries and/or illness that require removal, restriction, limitations from WSHS athletics or clearance to RTP A NOTE MUST BE PROVIDED to the Athletic Training Staff before they may return to participation.

AT work under the direction of a physician. Written communication is important to provide the best health care possible while staying compliant with the treating physicians recommendations with regards to treatment, rehab, return to play and status.

shall be IMMEDIATELY removed from the contest or practice and shall not return to play that same day.

Thereafter, the student shall not return to practice or competition until cleared by a physician or other health care provider approved by the local school board in accordance with state law.

Concussion Return to Play Protocol

-Sportsmanship

-Please do not approach a coach before or after a contest (unless the situation involves something of the following nature: health, immoral, or illegal).

-If there is a question about playing time, the player needs to be the first one to initiate the conversation with the coach, after this conversation if the parents need to be involved, that is the point at which a meeting with coach/parents/athlete can take place.
