Welcome!Welcome to the 28th Yapton Beerex, organised by the Western Sussex branch of the Campaign for Real Ale. The many volunteers who have helped to organise this event hope you have a great time. Please take a minute to familiarise yourself with a few things, especially if you are attending for the first time.
On entry, you will get a ticket that can be exchanged for a glass at the bar. This year you have a choice of glassware. You can choose the traditional half-pint glass or the more modern stem glass which holds 2/3 pint to the brim. Whichever you choose, you can only buy your beer or cider in third or half pints. Both glass types have these measures clearly marked. One other thing you will notice this year is that we have a glass sponsor. A big thank you to our sponsor, Goldmark Craft Beers. I am sure you will agree that the glasses are well worth keeping after the event.
You can also buy beer tokens at the entrance, as we do not accept cash at the bars. Tokens are worth 10p each, and sold in £1 strips. The bar staff will cross out tokens as you use them.
CAMRA members can get £2 of free tokens from the membership stand on produc-tion of their membership cards. If you’re not a member, why not join at the festival? You will get £4 in extra tokens as well as an extra incentive this year of a free brewery trip to be held on a Saturday in September. You will also get three months addition-al membership free if you pay be direct debit. You can obtain full details from the membership stand where you can sign up.
Beers are arranged in alphabetical order by brewery name, starting with A in the main hall, by the stage. They are also numbered to help you when ordering (num-bers 1 to 48 are in the main hall). The rest of the beers (numbers 49 to 62), along with the ciders and perries, are in the middle room behind the stage.
Food (cash payments, not tokens) will be available from the kitchen in the main hall during opening hours.
Toilets are by the entrance, to either side of the stage, and in the back room.
Our charity this year is Stonepillow — see page 16. Any of your unused tokens can be donated to this very worthwhile cause, by placing them in the box by the festival entrance as you leave.
Also before you leave, please fill out a voting slip to choose your favourite beer of the festival. We will draw a completed voting slip after the festival to win two free tickets to next year’s festival.

What is ?LocAle is an initiative that promotes pubs which sell locally-brewed ale, defined as “brewed within 25 miles of the Western Sussex branch boundary”.
Pubs awarded LocAle status endeavour to have at least one locally-brewed real ale on sale at all times (obviously, beers can run out if there is no replacement immedi-ately available). LocAle status can be withdrawn if qualifying beers are not regularly available, or if quality falls below acceptable levels.
Accredited pubs can display the LocAle sticker on their windows and doors. They may have posters up in the pub, and locally brewed real ales should have LocAle pump clip crowners on their handpumps.
LocAle brewers will have the LocAle logo next to them in this programme; it will also be on the cask end labels for each qualifying beer.
For a list of qualifying pubs and breweries for the Western Sussex branch, please see www.westernsussexcamra.org.uk/locale. Other CAMRA branches should have lists on their websites and the Sussex Drinker lists these addresses.

Transport InformationThe number 700 bus runs from Bilsham Road to Littlehampton, Bognor Regis, and Chichester, with services roughly every 20 minutes in each direction during the day-time. Services are more sparse in the evening. Timetables can be found online at www.stagecoachbus.com/timetables.
Our own preserved bus will run to Barnham station during the Saturday lunchtime session. Timetables will be displayed in the hall. Please note: the bus is on a first-come, first-served basis, with no guaranteed seating.
The last number 66 bus back to Barnham station leaves at 16:40 from the (still closed) Olive Branch, or slightly earlier from the end of Maypole Lane. It can also be picked up on the corner of Canal Road opposite the hall.

Forthcoming AttractionsCAMRA’s other Sussex branches also organise their own beer festivals. Coming up over the next year are:
Jun 16 – 17 Lewes, Town Hall (www.brightoncamra.org.uk)Oct 5 – 7 Eastbourne, Winter Garden (www.southeast-sussex-camra.com)Oct 20 – 21 Worthing, The Assembly Hall, Stone Abbott Road (www.aaa-camra.org.uk)March 2018 Sussex Beer festival (www.sussexbeerfestival.co.uk)
And don’t forget CAMRA’s national festival, the Great British Beer Festival at London’s Olympia from August 8 – 12 (www.gbbf.org.uk).
There are also many pubs near you running beer festivals over the coming months. A few of these are advertised within this programme at The Wilkes Head, The Chichester Inn, The Elsted Inn and The Cabin — check the Sussex Drinker also. There should be copies of the current edition available at the festival; if not, you can download it, plus back issues, from www.westernsussexcamra.org.uk/archives/category/sussex-drinker.
If you want to go slightly further afield, there are regular Bus to the Pub trips. Most of these take place during the daytime on weekdays, as this is when rural buses tend to actually run. More details in the Sussex Drinker.

Thank You and Goodbye!Roll the credits. I would like to begin by thanking the organising committee who stepped up and worked tirelessly when it looked like the festival may not go ahead due to a lack of people willing to take it on. In no particular order thank you then to Mick Reynolds, Mark Penfold, Chris Wright, Guy Parfect, Rob Castle and Pete Brown.
Next I give a massive thank you to Mark Lehmann at Goldmark Craft Beers for sponsoring the glassware. This has enabled us to limit the increases in beer prices this year as well as intro-ducing a choice of glassware.
We had additional sponsorship from Fetch The Drinks and The Crafty Pint. Fetch The Drinks supplied us with the cider and perries this year. The bottled beers were supplied by the Crafty Pint in Midhurst. Thanks go out to Sean McFetrich at Fetch The Drinks and Andrew Chiverton at The Crafty Pint.
A beer festival needs beer. Thanks go out to Chris Sayer at Small Beer, Kerry Hartley at Dark Star, Iain Clarke at Wild Weather Ales, Sean Ayling and Robin Wright at Pig & Porter and Andy Parker at Elusive for coordinating and delivering beer not just from their own breweries. Thank you also to Stuart Walker who kindly allowed the Arundel Brewery to be used as a temporary storage facility for the empty casks.
Beer is not the only requirement. We need something to put the casks on. Thank you to our neighbours at Arun & Adur branch for letting us use their stillage for the main bar. Thank you to the Wilkes Head for supplying and erecting the stillage and cooling system in the back bar.
Thank you to all our ticket-sellers. Every pub that sells tickets does so for no financial gain but I hope you attracted extra customers and beer sales through this vital role in helping us get the tickets out.

Finally, a huge thank you to all the volunteers who stepped forward to help out over the five days. Yes we do begin setting up on the Wednesday and a lot of work is done before we open the doors to everyone. Too many to list here but you know who you are. Please come back and help again next year.
