ABOUT THE PLAYThe scene is Noumea, capital city if the Free French island of New Caledonia
in the south Pacific ocean during the early days of World War II. Noumeawas a staging area, far from the acual fighting, as is apparent from the factthat civilians were allowed to remain instead of being evacuated as in forwardareas. At the time of the start of this play the closest forward area was inthe Solomons, nearly a thousand miles to the northwest. When it becameobvious that large numbers of military personnel would be passing throughin the near future, the French planters arranged to send wives and daughtersto a convenient small island and persuaded the authorities to place it "ou}of bounds" to all military personnel; also a fact was the presence of manyindentured Tonkinese from Indo-China. As the battle lines advanced towardGuam, the Philippines and eventually Japan. military forces steadily advanced__ ~L_~ L .•.•.L_ .•.:.••..•__ ,,__ ~__•• __ .I. __ 0'" _.t: .•.L .I t ... .1 .•.,__
