Model of Hanauma Bay:

Lessons Learned

If you limit entrance, or charge for entrance,

there needs to be a strong educational

program to explain why it is necessary.

1.

Model of Hanauma Bay:

Lessons Learned

If you assess a fee make sure that it goes

back to the attraction or natural resource

and ensure that users can see it and

promises are kept.

2.

Model of Hanauma Bay:

Lessons Learned

You need accountability and

responsibility prioritized and reinforced.

So whoever is in charge of oversight, as

administrations and county councils

change, it will stand the test of time

and endure.

3.

Model of Hanauma Bay:

Lessons Learned

You must have regular progress reports.

Do not wait for a crisis to occur before

you address the problem. Be proactive,

not reactive and make sure there is

transparency for the public to see.

4.

Model of Hanauma Bay:

Lessons Learned

If there is board or commission, always be

open to infusion of new blood and ideas. Your

membership needs to adapt to the times.

There needs to be a blend and balance of new

leaders and experienced hold overs. Make

sure you are mentoring and preparing for the

next wave of leadership.

5.

Model of Hanauma Bay:

Lessons Learned

Always be willing to embrace all points of

view. There needs to be tolerance and

respect for differences in opinion. Agree

to agree, agree to disagree, and civility

and the spirit of aloha should be the

overarching rule of thumb.
