I’msurethatbythetimeyouhavereadabouttheactivities,eventsandsuccessesofourstudentsinthisnewsletterandpossiblyinmyweeklyblogonthewebsite,youwillonceagainbeleftinnodoubtastothewealthandbreadthofexperiencesweendeavourtoprovideforouryoungpeoplehereatWellington,andthelastAutumnTermwascertainlynoexception.CueformetopubliclysayahugethankyoutoallstaffandthewiderWellingtoncommunityofgovernorsandindeedparentsforyourconsiderableenthusiasmandsupportofourworkhere.Gratifyingly,(bywayofalittleaside)thiswasratifiedbyavisitfromtheInvestorsinPeopleassessorinNovemberandweweredelightedtobere-awardedaccreditation.
WeweresadtosayfarewelltoMrsJohnson,SecondinMusicattheendoflastterm,wholeavesustotakeupapostnearerherhomeandwewishhergreatsuccess.MrDeyhasjoinedtheMusicdepartmenttemporarilyandwearedelightedtowelcomeMrsAllenandMrsWhithamtotheMFLDepartment.WeawaitnewsfromMrsRamsumairwhohascommencedhermaternityleaveandoverthenextmonthorso,wewillbesendingMrsWillingham(Art),MrsCampbell,(MFL)andMrsStephens(AssistantHead)offontheirmaternityleaveswithourverybestwishes.
Roofing updateAfteradegreeofdisruptionsincelastJune,theroofinganddrainageprojectisdrawingtoaclose.Ihavebeenmightilyimpressedwiththetwomajorcontractors,Conlon’sandFulwoodRoofing.Iammostappreciativeoftheirprofessionalism.However,inaniceway,IwillbegladtoseethemgoaswewillthenbeabletoreclaimareasoftheSchoolsite.IthasbeenproblematicattimestohavelimitedspacebutImustcreditthestudentsfortheirpatienceandconductthroughoutthisperiod.
Certificate EveningItseemssuchalongtimeagonow,butweenjoyedafabulouseveningbackinSeptember,whenwecelebratedtheoutstandingperformancesofourstudentsintheirGCSEsandALevelsin2015.As
always,MrsMoorhouselaidonamusicaltreatandthanksmustgotoprincipalguest,GlennRees,atruefriendandpartnerofWellingtonSchool,forhiswisewords.WehadarecordturnoutfrombothourformerYear11andYear13studentsandtheatmosphereinthe6thFormCommonRoom,whereweenjoyedrefreshmentsfollowingtheformalpartoftheevening,waswonderful.Theeventwasatruevindicationofthehardworkanddedicationofstudents,staffandparents.Wewishallthosestudents,whethertheyremainwithusorhavemovedontopasturesnewandthenextstageoftheireducationallives,alltheverybestofluck.
Carol ServiceTheCarolServicehastobeoneofmypersonalhighlightsoftheWellingtonyearandMrsMoorhousehasalsoprovidedherreportintheMusicsectionofthisnewsletter.Despiteherusualboutofanxiety,MrsMoorhouseneverfailstodeliveronthemusicalfront;allthechoirsandinstrumentalensemblesweresuperbagain,butIwasparticularlyimpressedwithmycolleaguesinthestaffand6thFormchoirthisyear.AcknowledgementmustalsogotoMrsJones,whohastakenoverfromMrsStephensasHeadofREP,andwhosejobitwasthereforetoarrangethereadingsandthedeliveryofthedelightful‘jellybaby’story.AttheendofalongandtiringAutumnTerm,theCarolServicewasonceagainamarvellousboostandafabulouswaytokick-startthefestiveperiod.
PSA Events
Ihavementionedherinmyweeklybulletinrecently,butawordofthankstooutgoingChairofthePSA,NicolaGreen,forheroutstandingserviceofthelast5years.Duringthattime,Nicolahasco-ordinatedthefundraisingwhichhasprovidedsomuchforourstudents.Wewishherwellandhopeshekeepsintouch.EmmaFirthassumestheroleofChair(Emmawillhaveherhandsfullassheisalsoaparentgovernor),SimonCarterremainsasViceChairandSalimaLeVellbecomesSecretary.ThankstoCherylLavin,whostepsdownasSecretary,forherdedication
totheWellingtoncause.Cherylcontinuesasagovernor.Atthebeginningoftheyear,thePSAsetitselfatargetofraisinganadditional30%thisyear.Followingaverysuccessful(thankyouYear7parents)FamilyFunNightandequallysuccessfulChristmasFair,wearewelloncoursetoachievethatgoal.IhavetosaytheappearanceofFatherChristmas,ona1950svintagedoubledeckerbusinthecarpark,provedarealattraction.WelldoneMrsTaskerandMrsByiersforliaisingwithSanta’sagentstosecurehisservicesatatimewhen,I’msurehewasingreatdemand.
WeareincrediblygratefulfortheworkofthePSA,andthatincludesallthemembersoftheSLTwhoattendeverymeetingandalltheevents,butwereallywouldwelcomemorenewbloodandfreshideas.Remember,everypennyraisedwillbenefitourstudents.The‘RaceNight’isournexteventinMarch,andIhopeyouwillsupportinsomecapacityorother;bysponsoringarace,buyingahorseorjustcomingalongandhavinga‘flutter’onthenight.MorePSAnewslaterinthisNewsletter.
Advancednoticeofthisyear’sSponsored WalkwhichtakesplaceonFriday26thFebruary.TheSchoolCouncilthisyearvotedunanimouslyfortheTeenageCancerTrusttobeourchosencharity.Ireallydohopewecanhitthat£40,000markforthefirsttimeforsuchabrilliantcause.Ihavemetrepresentativesofthecharityandtheyareabsolutelydelightedthatthestudentshavechosentosupportthem.I’msurewewilldothemproud.Therewillbeaseriesofassembliestopromotethecharityoverthecomingmonths.Pleasegivegenerouslyandencourageotherstodosowhenthetimecomes.

Uponarrivingwemetalocalartistwhogaveusaguidedtourofsomeofthesculpturesondisplay.AfterspendingthemorningproducingsketchesofthesculptureshiddenintheYorkshirefog,intheafternoon,eachstudentwasgivenalumpofclayandaskedtocreatea
responsetooneofthesculptures.Theylovedworkingoutsidewiththeclayandonlymoanedafewtimes(each)abouthavingverydirtyhands!
StudentshadtheopportunitytohavealookatmanyoftheothersculpturesaroundtheparkandsomeevenmadeitthewholewaytotheothersidetoviewthebreathtakingPoppyWavesculpture,takenfromtheTowerofLondon.
YetanotherfantasticvisittotheYorkshireSculpturePark,welldonetoalltheYear9swhocamealong.IhopeyoufounditasinspirationalasIdid.

Mono Printing9.7havehadafabuloustimethistermreminiscingabouttheirsummerholidaysandexploringallthings‘seaside’!StudentsevenhadtheopportunitytocompletesomeMonoPrintsoftheirdrawingsintheirsketchbooks.ThiswassetuplikeaMaryBerry‘technicalchallenge’forthegroup.Instructionswereminimalandthestudentswereencouragedtoworkindependentlytofindouthowtocompetethetaskthroughwatchingaseriesoftechnicalvideos.Well,Icanhonestlysaythewholeclasscertainlyrosetothetechnicalchallenge,thereweresomefabulousresultsthatIthinkwouldhaveimpressedanyjudge!

The Big Draw:Onceagain,theArtDepartmenttookpartinthe‘BigDraw’,anationalcampaigntopromotedrawing.Thethemethisyearwas‘Everydrawingtellsastory’.Usingthistheme,wedecidedtocelebratethe150thanniversaryofAlice’sAdventuresinWonderlandbyLewisCarroll.Wecameupwiththeideatotransformourartcorridorinto‘Wonderland’andthateverypupilinYears7,8,9&10wouldcompleteapartofwonderland.Theworkthatwasproducedinoneweekwasoutstanding–from3ftflamingos,giantkeysmadefromModroc,3Dtoadstools,papercutclocks,largemurals,posters–younameitweprobablymadeit!
Welldonetoallthepupilswhotookpart,foryourenthusiasmandhardworkandanenormousthankyoutoMissGreyandMrsWillinghamforyourideas,aswellasthepreparationthathastakenplaceinorderforthiseventtorunsosmoothly.
Itwassoamazingtoseetheworkupfordisplayandevenbettertoseeourpupilsandvisitorstakethetimetoviewallthework.Arecordnumberoffairylightswereusedandwehaveabsolutelylovedteachingfromourwonderlandcorridor.

KS3 - Food Technology - Year 7Year7studentshadathemeforthisrotationof‘AHealthyPackedLunch’,withsomechallenginghomeworkset.Oneofmyfavouritetasksinvolvedpupilschoosinganythingtheywouldliketocookoveraweekendwiththeirparents/grandparents/carers/siblingsorevenindependently.Iaskedallstudentstocooksomethingthatinvolvedthemusingeithertheovenorthegrillandevidencethiswitheitheraphotograph,aletterfromtheirparentsorasignatureintheirplanners.
Theresponseblewmeaway!Ithinktheirparentsalsoenjoyedhavingasous-chefintheirkitchen.Ourstudentshadcookedpartsofaroastdinner,forexampleYorkshirepuddingsandgravy,fruitcrumbles,browniesandmanymore.AhugethankyougoestoJosephLeeandfamilyforkindlybakingeveryoneintheclassacupcakeandeventhestaffweregivenonetoo.WhatakindgesturethiswasandIcanconfirmtheyweredelicious;verymoistandevenlyrisen.MaryBerrywouldbeproud!

KS3 - Food Technology - Year 8Thisrotation,ourYear8studentshadathemeof“AMediterraneanDiet’,toensureallstudentsgainawealthofknowledgeofhealthydishesthattheycanprepareandcookforatargetaudienceofeitherfamiliesorcouples.AllstudentsstartedbycarryingoutsomeresearchofwhichMediterraneancountrytheywouldliketobasetheiringredientson.TheyhadchoicesofSpanish,ItalianorGreekCuisine.
CalumMilnewritesthisreportofthefoodrotationsofar:
‘FoodTechnologyinYear8hasbeenreallyfunsofar,wehavecreatedmanymarvellousdishesrangingfrommulticolouredvegetableandgrilledhalloumiKebabstomouthwateringpizza.TocreatethesedisheswewereinspiredbytheMediterraneancuisineandthemethodstheyusetocook.
Sofar,Ihaveenjoyedcreatingthepizzabecausewecouldcreatethedoughfromscratchaswellaspractiseourchoppingmethods.Itwasreallyfuntomakeaswell.Alsoitwasmyfavouritetotasteduetothevarietyoftexturesfromthesoftvegetablestothecrunchycrusts.PlusthefactIcannowmakemyownpizzafromscratchathomeisfantastic.’
InthefollowingweekstherewillbeapastadishandaSpanishorangecakeforstudentstomake,andfinallytheywillredesignandcookoneoftheirpreviouslycookeddishesforafinalassessment.

KS3 - Ready Steady CookOnMonday19thOctober,thewholeofYear9witnessedaready,steady,cookcompetitionbetweenMissTidburyandMrsRyan.TheschoolcaterershostedtheeventledbyachefcalledTimwhowasassistedbytheschoolcateringmanager,Leon.
ThegreenteamconsistedofMissTidbury,CameronStenhouseandLilyAvison-HallandontheredteamtherewasMrsRyan,LauraRundleandAffyKhan.
Beforecookingbegan,Timexplainedthemainfoodgroupsandwentthroughwhatabalanceddietshouldlooklike.TimchosethreeYear9pupilstohelpwiththis–JacobGregory,Georgia
HighamandDanielleBroadbent.
Afterthistheteamsweretoldwhattheywouldbecookingandshowntheequipmentthattheycoulduse:theredsweremakingMakhaniChickenwithRiceandthegreens,ChineseQuornStirFrywithnoodlesandcucumbersalad.
Oncetheteamshadfoundoutwhattheywerecooking,thetimer
startedandthecontestwason.Theteamshad15minutestocookandservetheirdishes.Teamredstartedbysteamingthericeandthegreensstartedbypreparingthecarrots.Astheminutestickedby,theepiccookingbattleintensifiedwiththeteamsbecomingmorestressedbytheminute.Withjustsecondstogo,theteamsstartedtoplateup,anxioustogettheirpresentationcorrect.Andthenitwasallover.Therewasnothingmoretheteamscoulddo.Judgingcommenced.
Ahostofstudentsandteachers,whowereeagerlywatching,werechosentotastethefoodandfeedbacktotheaudiencewhowouldthenvoteusingtheredandgreencards.Itturnedouttobeaprettymuchunanimousvote...withtheredteamemergingasthevictors.
Itwasathoroughlyenjoyableactivityforallwhoparticipatedandspectated.CommiserationstoMissTidbury,maybenexttime!

KS3 - Graphics - Year 9 Food Packaging ProjectYear9studentsstudyingGraphicProductshavebeendeveloping‘takeaway’packagingforafoodsectorareaoftheirchoice.Studentshavedesignedtheirownbrandbydevelopingauniquelogorelevanttotheirfoodtheme.Thefoodpackagingsystemtheyhavecreatedhadtobesuitableforcommercialuseinarestaurantorfoodoutletandbeabletocontainadrinkandawrappedfoodproduct.

KS4 - GCSE Textiles Year 11OurYear11studentsarenowinthethickofmanufacturingtheirowndesignsandallareworkingatapacetocompletetoatightdeadline.Theclasshasmentionedtomethattheyarereallyenjoyingthepracticalelementofthecourseandfindingthattheonehourlessonfliesby.Iaskedthreeofmystudents;EmilyHolt,ConnieBennett&EllaTaylortocomposethisreportontheirclass’experiencessofar.
‘AsaclasswearemakingallsortsoftextileproductsrangingfromcostumessuitableforBalletperformances,musicalsandtheatricalproductions,tointeractivestuffedanimalsandbuildyourownplaycubes.Weallenjoythecreativeoutletwereceivefromdoingpracticalwork,despiteitbeingtimeconsumingandrequiringalotofconcentrationtoachievethehighestmanufacturingstandards.Wearealsofeelingthepressureoftryingtogeteverythingfinishedtomeetthedeadline,howeverdespitethisthesubjectisthoroughlyenjoyable.Wehavelearntmanydifferenttechniquesinthepastfewmonthssuchasshibori,appliqué,heatsettingandfoiling,whichwehaveusedonourfinalpieces.’
Icanvouchformystudentsthatallareusingavarietyoftechniquesaswellassomecompletingmethodsofdecorationandconstructionthattheyhaveresearchedindependently.Somehaveevenvisitedtextileexhibitionsandlearntnewtechniquesthisway.
OnafinalnoteIwouldliketosayahugewelldonetoallthosestudentswhoperformedwellintheirrecentmockexams.Theywillsoonfindouttheirresultsatparentsevening,butIamthrilledforthosewhoIcantellhavebeenworkingindependently.Thesestudentshavemadeuseoftheendlessmockexamstyletheoryquestionstarteractivities,therevisionguidesIhavewrittenandthenotesfromtheorylessonstorevisetheirsocksoff.Thisisapositivesignthatallstudentsshouldbegainingresultstobeproudofcomesummer2016.

10.5 Poetry10.5havebeenworkingonan‘IntroductiontoPoetry’week,learningandthenperformingtheDylanThomaspoem,‘Donotgogentle….’Pupilshadtolearnhowtousetheirvoiceforperformancebyintonating,usingvoicecontrolandemphasisingemotions.TheclassworkedfabulouslyonthisactivityandperformedtheirfinishedversionintheValeHall.Onfillinginaquestionnaire,pupilsinformedmethattheyhadreallyenjoyedtheweekandthatithadhelpedthemtofurtherappreciatethepowerofpoetry!

10.4 English Embracing Poetry10.4havebeenbusycreatingsomeimpressivepiecesonwhetherornottheyfeelteenagershaveaneasylife;thisformspartofaunitcalled‘OurVoice’whichintroducesstudentstothetrialsofthewritingpaperforGCSEEnglishLanguage.Pupilsdesignedplayingcardswiththeirintroductionandconclusionson–thatwaytheyhavemadesurethesearesemanticallylinkedandyoushouldeasilybeabletoplayagameofSnapwiththem!We’vealsomadeadisplayoftheirexcellentwork.
TheclassalsohadabriefintroductiontoUnseenPoetry.WecompletedsomeP4Cworkwherewedebatedwhether‘HarryPotter’couldhavebeenwrittenasapoem;whetherpoetryshouldrhyme(welldonetoPanSakellariouforbeingsoadamantitshouldthathewroteapoemtoproveit!)andwhetherweshouldhaveaNationalAnthemoraNationalPoem.IlovedtheresponseofJoeMcGuinnessandBenRoylewhentheyexclaimed,‘Wow,nowIdon’tknowwhattothink!’whenwediscussedWilliamBlake’s‘Jerusalem’whichthepupilsrecognisedasasongbutdidn’trealiseitwasapoem!Evenbetterwhenthesongfeaturedonanadvertinthemiddleoftherugbythateveningwhichlotsofthepupilssaw.
Totopoffagreatfewdaysofpoetry,theclassmadetheirownvideopoemtoexploretheimagery,symbolismandthemesinSimonArmitage’s‘Mother,anyDistance…’Thepupilswereincrediblycreative,evencapturingaerialshotsfromtheLyntonBuilding!Thanksalsotothesitestaffforloaningtheclasssometapemeasures–acentralmetaphorinthepoem.

Reward trip to the BBC studiosEverwonderedwhokeptyourschooldisplayslookingsofabulous?WehavethreeverycreativeYear8studentswhohelpmaintainallofthedisplaysaroundtheschool–fromupdatingthesportsnewstorippingdownolddisplaysandputtingupnew.ElayneAtherton,StephanieEatonandElizabethBrouardhaveworkeddiligentlyoverthepastyear.AsarewardfortheirhardworkIdecidedthatatouraroundtheBBCstudioswouldbeawell-deservedtreat.Settingoffonthetramtheymadetheirwaytothestudios…IthinkIwasthemostexcited!WegottoseelotsofpropsusedinsomeofthemostpopularTVshowsincludingtheTardisandDaleks,thefamousCountdownclockand‘Thechair’fromTheVoiceplusoneofthelargestChristmastreesanybodyhadeverseen!WemadeourwayaroundavarietyofstudioswhichincludedtheCBBCpresenterstudio,MatchoftheDay(plusGaryLineker’sdressingroom!)wherewelearntaboutauto-cues,augmentedrealitytechnology,lightingtechniquesandmuchmore.TheteamhadplentyofquestionsandourlovelyguidesBobbyandPaulwerenothingbuthelpful.ThefinalsectionwasavisittotheNewsround,QuestionofSportandtheweatherpresentersets,whereStephanieeventriedherhandatpresentingtheNews,veryprofessionalandmostcertainlyanatural.Whilstallthreehadagoatpresentingtheweatherandexperimentingwiththe‘invisibilitycloak’againstthegreenscreenwatchingtheirfloatingheadsandarmsonscreenasaresult.TheyendedtheirtourwithastrollaroundtheBluePetergardensbeforehoppingbackonthetram.Agreatmorninghadbyallandawell-deservedtreatforthestudentswhoworksohardtokeeptheschooldisplayslookinggreat.

Year 10 get to grips with ‘The Scottish Play’: it’s a rap!MrsYoungand10.0havebeenstudiouslyexploringShakespeare’s‘Macbeth’duringtheAutumnTerm.Gettingtogripswiththegoryevents,gettingtoknowthearrayofcharacters,examiningthecentralthemesandnotleastbecomingexpertinanalysingthebard’slanguageuse,pupilshaveputtheirknowledgeandcreativitytothetestandturned‘rapstars’.Manyalaughwassharedinplanning,drafting,rehearsing,performingandevenrecordingtheirown‘Macbethraps’forposterityand,ofcourse,forfuturerevisionsinceunderthenewspecificationforGCSEEnglishLiterature,studentsarerequiredtolearnquotationsbyheartfortheirterminalexamination.Theresultsareextremelyentertaining,nottomentioneducational!Muchfunwashadbyall.
SPaG SupportAlongwiththeYear7tutorteam,wehaveissuedpupilswithaSPaGbooklettosupportthembothinandoutofschoolwiththeirliteracyandlanguageforlearningacrossalllessons.
Thiswasdesignedbystaffsothecontentismeaningfulandusefultopupils’studies.Whenpupilsarecompletinghomeworktheyshouldutilisethesetohelpthemchecktheaccuracyandfluencyoftheirwritinganddofeelfreetotestpupilsonsomeofthekeywords!Similarly,underthe‘Learners’tabonthewebsiteyouwillfindasuiteofliteracyresourceswhichpupilscancompleteasextraliteracysupportoutsideofschoolaswellasreadinglistsandkeyspellings.AnyextraworkpupilsproducewillbemarkedgladlybytheirEnglishteachersandanyfurtherreadingrecommendationsyoumaywishforwillalsobehappilyprovided.AsDumbledoreoncesaid,‘Wordsareourmostinexhaustiblesourceofmagic.’

Year 9 WWI Battlefields TourIntheweekbeforehalf-term39wearylookingpupilsand4membersofstaffdepartedWellingtonat5:30amforwhatwasatrulymemorableandinspiringtouroftheBattlefieldsoftheWesternFront.Thepupilshadapackedscheduleandwereabletolearnfirst-handthelessonsoftheFirstWorldWar,visitingsitessuchastheThiepvalmemorial,TyneCotcemeteryandtheMeninGateinYprestonamebutafew.
Despiteanunscheduledlongjourneyonthefirstday(viatheM25carpark)thepupilswereraringtogobrightandearlyonthesecondday.ThetourwasledbytheencyclopaedicMikeScottandthecharismaticformersoldierMajorBobDarby.BothtourguidesdidanoutstandingjobofengagingthestudentsandtheyreallybroughthomethepersonalsacrificesmadebysoldiersduringWWI.Asaformerhistoryteacher,Mikewasfantasticinencouragingstudentstoquestiontheirsurroundings,empathisewiththosewhogavetheirlives,aswellasexploredebatesaboutthenatureofthefighting.Therewasarealemphasisonthelivesoftheindividualswhofoughtinthewarandthisreallystruckachordwiththepupils.Mikewasalsoabletolocatethefinalrestingplacesofrelativesofthosepupilswhohadgivendetailsoftheirrelativestohimpriortothetrip,suchasAliciaCole(pictured).MissTidburyandMrsRoe-BennettwerealsodelightedwhenMikehadbeenabletolocatethememorialswhichborethenamesoftheirrelatives.
Throughoutthetourthepupilsconductedthemselveswiththeupmostrespectfortheirsurroundingsandwerearealcredittotheschool–evenaftersomeincrediblytediouscoachjourneys!AparticularhighlightwastheopportunityforReeceGaultonandAllyBrooke(pictured)tolayawreathattheMeninGateonbehalfofWellingtonSchoolinmemoryofthosewholosttheirlivesinWWI.Overallitwasatrulybeneficialtriptoallofthoseinvolvedandleftalastingimpactforbothstaffandstudents;inspiringlessonslearnedfromthetourtobebroughtintoclassroomteaching.Thetripwasafantasticopportunitytodeepenthepupils’understandingoftheimportanceofWWIintherunuptoRemembranceDay,somuchsothatMrAshworthiscurrentlyfinalisingthebookingfornextyear!

Year 7 Mathematical Modelling EveningAroundthirtyparentsandstudentsfromYear7attendedaMathematicseveningintheValeHallinNovember.TheywereintroducedtosomeofthechangesbeingmadetoKeyStageThreeMathematicsbeforeembarkingonaseriesof“mini”classroomactivities.Theytookpartinworkaboutnegativenumbers,areaandratioplusparentsgottoseefirst-handhowtheirchildrenlearnaboutnewtopicsandwereabletoasktheteamofMathematicsteachersonhandaboutanythingtodowiththesubject.

Meeting the Mayor of TraffordOnTuesday29thSeptember15GermanstudentsfromFellbachnearStuttgarthadthepleasureofmeetingtheMayorofTrafford.WellingtonSchoolandAGSBrunanannualGermanexchange,wherebystudentsareofferedtheopportunitytospendaweekimmersedinsomeoneelse’slife;learningabouttheother’sculture,language,educationanddailyroutine.Theexchangehasbeenrunningforsome15years,andstudentsfromboththeGermanschool–FriedrichSchillerGymnasium–andthetwoEnglishschoolsbenefitgreatlyfromtheexperience.
Thisyear,aslightadjustmentwasmadetothefamiliaritinerarywiththeadditionofavisittoTraffordTownHallforanaudiencewiththeMayorofTrafford,CouncillorJohnHolden.Thegroupdulyarrivedat11o’clock
andweregreetedbytheMayor’sAttendant,wholedthemthroughtobewelcomedbyCllrHoldenandhiswife,ChristineHolden.Averypleasantandunexpectedsurpriseawaitedthem,astheMayorproceededtoaddressthegroupinnear-perfectGerman,makingthemfeelimmediatelyrelaxedandsomewhathonoured.
ThegroupweretakentotheCouncilChamber,wheretheyenjoyedanexplanationofCouncilproceedings,beforebeingencouragedtotestouttheimpressivetechnologyintheChamber.Gradually,asthestudentsbecamebraver,theypressedtheirredbuttonstoposequestionstotheMayor,andweredelightedwhentheirfacesappearedontheTVscreenabovethemandtheirmicrophonessprangintoactionsothattheirquestioncouldbeheardbyeveryonepresent.TheMayorpatientlyandattentivelylistenedtotheirquestionsandrepliedwithinteresting,anecdotalresponses.OneboyaskedCllrHolden“Arethereanythingsthatyoudon’tlikeinyourjob?”TheMayorrepliedbysaying“Somemornings,youdon’tknowwhatdayit
is!”butwentontosay“IhavenotdoneanengagementyetthatIhaven’tenjoyed.Andthatincludestoday.You’realotlesstroublethanthecouncillors!”

European Day of LanguagesOnFriday25thSeptember,WellingtoncelebratedEuropeanDayofLanguages,organisedbyMissWeeks.52pupilsacrossallyeargroupssigneduptogivepupilsfromYears7and8aninsightintoanewforeignlanguage.Thiswasn’tthetypicalFrench,GermanorSpanishthatwelearninusualMFLlessonsatWellington,butinsteadtherewasavarietyofexcitinglanguagestocatchaglimpseofsuchasXhosa,AlbanianandPolishtonameafew.Duringthecarouseloflanguagestherewasavarietyofdifferentactivities.Forexample,youcouldlearnhowtowrite‘mynameis’inCantoneseorevenhowtosignyournameinSignLanguage.Therewereastaggering17differentlanguagesthatpupilscouldlearnfromtheirpeers!Notonlythisbutsomelinguistsalsobroughtinitemsoftraditionaldress,typicalfoods,culturalpicturesandtrinketswiththemtoo.Thiswasafantasticwaytoseehowotherculturesliveandgavethepupilsabetterunderstandingofotherlanguagesthattheycouldbelearning.
I’msurethatoneofthethingsthatweareallinterestedinwhenlearningaboutanewcultureistheirfood,soMrsWilliams,withthehelpofYear10girls,setupabeautifularrangementofdifferentsnacksfromallovertheworldforpupilstotryatthe‘Internationalcafé’.ItwasparticularlyentertainingtoseesomeoftheYear8boystryingsomemorecommonlyavailablefoodslikebrieforthefirsttime!
Inadditiontothisevent,allpupilsdidalanguagerelatedquizduringtutortime,Year7pupilscompletedacelebritylinguistbadgequizandtherewasDutchClubandaYear8internationalfootballquizatlunchtime.
ThefactthatEuropeanDayofLanguageshasbeencelebratedforeightyearsatWellingtonnow,provesjusthowmuchofasuccessitisandhowbeneficialitisforthepupils.Thepupilsbehavedimpeccablyforyetanotheryearandseemedtoreallyenjoylearningaboutanewlanguagefromsomeoftheirpeers.Theeventransmoothlythroughoutperiods1-4andallpupilsbehavedinaprofessionalmannerwhenapproachinganewlanguage,whichwasgreattosee.

Year 9 RugbyTheyear9rugbyteamhaveproducedsomegreatrugbyinthefirstterm,finishingwith4winsand2losses.ThefirstgamesawtheboyslosetoaphysicalAshtononMerseyteamathome.TheysoonbouncedbackwithabigwinawayatCongleton65-5.FollowingtheCongletonwin,theteamcame2ndintheRugbyWorldCupEmergingSchoolCompetition.Thistournamentsawmanynewplayersmaketheirdebutsfortheteam.Withatotalof8schoolsinthetournament,2ndplacewasagreatachievement.AnotherimpressivewinawayatSaleGrammar47-20sawtheteam’sgoodformcontinuing.Unfortunately,ahandfulofcancelledfixturesmeanttheboyshadtowaitafewweeksuntiltheirnextfixture.StAmbroseawaywasthefinalfixturebeforeChristmas.Thisgamewasalwaysgoingtobetoughbutwithunavailabilitythroughinjuryandschoolstripstokeyplayers,theboysstruggledandfelltotheir2ndloss.IntherunuptoChristmastheboysgottheopportunitytobecoachedbyavarietyofAvivaPremiershipsideSaleSharksplayersandbackroomstaff.Thiswasagreatexperienceforallplayersinvolved,andhopefullytheywillbeabletotakewhattheylearntfromthedayintotheirupandcomingfixtures.

Year 7 RugbySinceIbegantopromoterugbyhereatWellingtoninmyfirstyearasHeadin2012,Septemberhasbroughtasenseofeageranticipation.It’sbeenabitlikea‘luckydip’–youneverquiteknowwhatyou’regoingtoget.WhenIlookeddowndetailspriortoourfirsttrainingsession,myexcitementgrew,asnumberswerehighandtherewasafairamountofplayingexperience;morethantheaveragesmatteringofboyswhohadplayedatAltrinchamKersal,SaleandBowdon.Thepotentialwasevidentfromtheoutsetandwewereconfidentforourfirst(veryearly)encounterwithStretfordGrammar,nowestablishedasourannualseasonopener.Wewerebyfarthesuperiorteamandplayedsomefantasticrugbybutunfortunatelytheyhadthe‘biglad’whoscoredahat-trickandthegame,frustratingly,finished3trieseach.CameronDavenport,inhisfirstgameofrugby,wasparticularlyimpressive.
VictoriesfollowedagainstAshtononMersey,CongletonandSaleGrammarandtheboys’skilllevelandgameawarenessdeveloped.TheadditionofEthan,‘theColossus’Stewardtothesquadwasalsoarealbonus.DefeatsagainstLymmHigh(twice)andStAmbrosewerenodisgraceandwecompetedwellinmostaspectsofthegamebutshowedadegreeofnaivety,unsurprisingly,attimes.Weshouldacknowledgethatthesearebothverywellestablishedrugbyschoolswithboyswith,generally,fargreaterrugbyexperience.Withcommitmenttotraining,thereisnoreasonwhywecannotclosethegapintime.
Unfortunately,wehavehadanumberofcancellationsduetotheweatherand,therefore,lostabitofmomentum.Theboyshavebeentrainingwell,however,andshouldbeconfidentoffurthersuccessintheSpringTerm.
Imustsayahugewelldonetoalltheboys,astheirattitudehasbeencommendableonthewhole,particularlythosenewtothegame.Aswemoveforward,Iamlookingforthemoreexperiencedboystoshowrealleadershipandmaturitytohelpusimprovemoreswiftly.IfwearegoingtocompeteinSouthAfricain2017,wearegoingtohavetoworkincrediblyhard!

Therewereover100peopleinattendanceandthewholeeveningwasahugesuccess.Itwasatimetoreflect,praiseandrewardthepupilsforalltheirhardworkandsacrificeoverthelast12months.Thefeedbackfromstaff,pupilsandparentswasfantastic.Theylikedtheinformalstructuretothenightandthefacttheycouldmixandtalktootherparents,pupilsandstaffaftertheceremonyitself.
TheDukeofEdinburghawardisgrowinginpopularityamongWellingtonstudentseachyearandconsequently,wehavedecidedtoruntheSilverawardthisyear,andhopefullywewilltakeonaround20ofthededicatedandenthusiasticpupilspicturedbelow.

Boys Hockey vs Sale Grammar TheKeyStage3and4boysteamsplayedtheirfirstgamethisterm.Atoughoppositionmadeithardworkfortheladsbuttheyfoughtonnonetheless.TheKS3gamewasaclosecallandgoalswereimminentyetbothdefensivelinesmadeitagreatmatch.Thefinalscorewasa2-1defeatwithBrandonLanereceivingmanofthematch.Ouryear10boysplayedagainstSaleGrammar’sYear11teamsoitwasdestinedtobetough.Withonlyafewofourladsplayingregularlywehadagreatmatchbutsadlylost.OliBrockett(captain)saidhewaspleasedwiththeteam’sperformancebutguttedtohavelost.MissRichards

RossfromYear12.WebeganwithagameagainstAOMwhichwenarrowlywonfortheAteamandthenatournamentfortheBandCteams.Whatasuperbstarttotheyear.WefollowedthiswithwinsagainstallotherTraffordSouthschools,butweknewBTHwouldbeourtoughestmatch.ItfelljustbeforeChristmasonadarkanddrizzlynight.BothourselvesandBTHhadwonalltheirgamessofarsothiswasthedecider.Wewerewell
preparedbutitwasachallenginggame.Thefinalscorehadjustonegoalbetweenusbutitwasintheirfavour.WenowplayUrmstonGrammarinthesemi-finaltoseewhogetsintotheTraffordSchoolsfinal.Welldonetoallthosewhohaveplayedthisyear,butaspecialmentiontoIsabelaBandiera-Leighwhohasscoredmostofthegoalsandreceivedgirlofthegamemostoften!MissRichards
Year 7 BasketballTheYear7’srecordedanunbeatenseasonintheirfirstyearatWellingtonfinishingwith5winsfrom5games.
Intheir5gamesWellingtonmanagedtoscoreover150pointsproducingsomeoutstandingbasketball.TheseasonstartedwithatoughawaywinatNorthCestrian.Withthisbeingthefirstgameandsomeplayersnewtobasketball,theteamlookedabitrustyfirsthalfbutsoonstartedtoshowtheirpotential.ThefollowinggamesawWellingtonhostBroadoak.Thiswasoneoftheperformancesoftheseasonwithallplayerscontributingtoabigwin,notchingover60points.SaleHighwerethenextteamtotraveltoWellington.Wellingtonagainproducedsomeimpressivebasketballtorecordtheir3rdwin.BTHwerenextupandalthoughtheboysstruggledattimes,theymanagedtosecuretheir4thwinandsetupabigfinalgameagainstStAmbrose.ThisprovedtobeWellington’stoughestfixturewithStAmbrosereallyputtingWellingtonunderpressureforbigpartsofthegame.Despitethis,Wellingtonproducedsomeoutstandingbasketballoftheirownandsecuredtheirfinalwintogounbeaten.BothMrTomlinsonandIhavebeenreallyimpressedwiththeattitudeandeffortofallplayersthisterm.

ThestudentstravelledwithMissHodgesbytramtothemuseuminthecentreofManchester.Afterspendingtimelookingattheexhibitsandhavingagoatsometheinteractiveexhibitionsthestudentswereabletolistentoalecturefromasporthistorian.Theinformationtheygatheredlinksinwellwiththecontemporarysyllabustheyarecovering,andtheyhavelotsofextraexamplestouseintheiressays.Ihavenodoubtthiswillaidtheiressaywritingandleadtostrongerexamanswersinthesummer.

Weshowedourdancesand theyperformedforus.Theywereallbrilliant,withpompomsandchanting-itwasgreatfun!Beforeeachdanceeveryonechanted,‘Let’sgoXX,let’sgo’witheachteamnameincludedandaftereachdancewechanted,‘Weareproudofyou,sayweareproudofyou,oooohlet’sgo’.
TheYear7sperformancewasonfourthandlateritwastheYear8’sturntodotheirfantasticdance.SoonafteritwastheYear8stuntgroupwhodidsomeamazingandunbelievablygoodstuntswheretheythrewAimee,LaurenandAmyintheairandheldthemupreallyhigh.Afterwardswewereallowedtohaveamassivedancewithalltheotherperformerstosomeseasonalsongs.

Physics students in LondonInNovember,17A-levelSciencestudentsventuredtothecapitalcitytoexperienceauniqueScientificopportunity.BeforethemaineventitselfthestudentsgottoexploreLondon’sScienceandNaturalHistorymuseum.ThewalkaroundHydePark’s“WinterWonderland”madeusfeelalittlemoreChristmassytoo!WewerealsoabletoexplorethesightsatWembleystadiumwhichwasneartothehotelwherewewerestaying.SomestudentsthinkthattheyevengotaglimpseoftheX-FactorjudgeswhohadbeenfilmingontheSundaynightatWembley!StudentswerereadytojumpintothewaterfountainoutsidetheStadiumforaphotoopportunity,butthisledtomuchamusementwhensomeofthemweresubjectedtoanimpromptushower!
ThenextdaywehadashortstopinLeicesterSquareandChinaTownbeforeweheadedofftoPiccadillyTheatretolistento3seminarsgivenbySimonWatt,AndreasSellaandBrianCox.EachgaveafascinatinginsightintotheirchosenScienceandwelearnthowsomethingassimpleasiceiswellandtrulyuniqueandhowthegeneticsofcomicbooksuperheroescanbefoundineverydaypeople.In1hour,ProfessorCoxalso(somehow)managedtodiscusstheoriesbehindtheminute(thefundamentalparticlesthatmakeupeverything)tothemassive(thestartingoftheUniverse).ThestudentsseemedtoreallyenjoythemselvesandtheeventevenchallengedtheirownperceptionsofthedifferentSciences.OverallitwasatrulyinspiringtripoutandhopefullythishasencouragedourScientiststolookbeyondwhatwelearninthecurriculum.AsignedpictureofBrianCoxsitsproudlyinthefoldersofsomeoftheA-levelPhysicsstudentsandhopefullythatwillinspirethemtodowellintheirexams!

Chemistry Week 2015TheSciencedepartmentcelebratedChemistryweekbetweenthe16thand20thofNovember.Thethemewas‘ChemistryEverywhere’.AllKS3groupstookpartinthreespeciallessonslookingatChemistryineverydaysituations.
Inthefirstlessontheyinvestigatedhowfruitcouldbeusedtomakeabatteryandfoundthatdifferentsizesofcitrusfruitsproduceddifferentresults,andalsorealisedthatyouneededtwodifferentmetalsaselectrodestogetthegreatestvoltage.
Inthesecondlessonthepupilslookedatthechemicalsfoundinfoodandinvestigatedwhichhouseholdsubstancescouldbeusedtomixoilandwaterandactasemulsifiers.Forexample,theyfoundthatmustardwasgoodatmixingtheoilandwater,butthatsugarhadnoeffect.
Inthefinallessonthepupilshadagoatmakingbathbombswhichleftawonderfularomainthedepartment!
Agoodweekforallinvolved.

STEM club STEMclubhasbeenaroaringsuccesswithYear7.Westartedtolookathowwecoulddesignahome-madewindturbinetobeabletoliftacupfullofpenniesoffthefloor.Somegreatideaswereoffered,andsomeofthedesignswereexcellent.Pupilsconsideredwhatmakesagoodwindturbine,fromthesizeofthebladestothetypeofmaterialused.
Thiscompetitionranforaround7weeksandculminatedinafinalcompetitiontoseewhoseturbinecouldlifttheheaviestcup!
Thewinningteam(FelixHoxley,ErenSayan,ThomasPavey&JackRyan)managedtolift100gofmassesofthefloor!
Therangeofwindturbineswereexcellent,andpupilshadconsideredthesize,shapeandorientationoftheblades,whichmaterialswerebesttouse,
howtocreateholesandstructuretheirturbine.
Overall,therewasarangeofhighlyaestheticallypleasingwindturbines,rangingfromthoseusingwindscreenwipersasblades,totheresourcefuluseofgluegunsforattachingthepiecestogether.
Wewereincrediblyimpressedwiththedevelopingengineeringskillsshownbyallpupilsinvolved–Welldone!LookoutforournextSTEMendeavourswhichwillinvolvebuildingamock‘Bloodhound’forKS4pupils,andaLegoRobotchallengeforKS3.

Biology WeekThisyear,BiologyWeekcelebratedWorldFungiDaybyperformingmushroomdissections,growingthemostimpressivemouldstructuresandbakinghundredsofBiology-relatedcakesaspartoftheGreatBiologyBakeOff.MrsHoogenbergandMrsBoothhadawonderfultimejudgingthebakes!WewereoverwhelmedbytheBakeOffresponsetoNationalBiologyWeekandhowsomeofthecakeswereusedtoraisemoneyfortheYear10bakesaleinaidoftheTeenageCancerTrust.Thankyoutoallthepupils(andparents)fortheirdeliciousefforts!

It’sbeenabusytermforWellington’sfledgingPoliticsSociety.EstablishedaftertheGeneralElectioninMay,thesocietyisreallystartingtogrow,withnewmembersjoiningtheregularpoliticalenthusiastseachweek.
Anumberoftopicshavebeendiscussed,includingwhethertheUKshouldseektoleavetheEuropeanUnion,iftheUKshouldinterveneinSyriaandwhetheronlyEnglishMPsshouldvoteonmattersthataffectEngland.Onediscussionthatprovokedthemostpassionatedebatewaswhetherculturalappropriationwasappropriate–atopicsuggestedfordiscussionbymembersofthesociety.
Thestandardofdebatehasbeenveryhigh–andattimesheated!–andthestudentshaveconductedtheirdiscussionswithamaturityandarespectforopinionsthatdiffertotheirown.Wearealwaysencouragingnewmemberstojoin,soifyouhaveaninterestinpoliticsandonwhatisgoingonintheUKandaroundtheworld,orhaveatopicorissueyouwouldliketodiscuss,comeandseeusonWednesdaylunchtimesinWellington’sveryownDebatingChamber(otherwiseknownasroom8)!

Year 7 Mentoring Year7haveteamedupwithYear10forawholeyeargrouppeermentoringprogrammeonaFridaywhichmeansthateverystudentinYear7ispairedwithastudentinYear10.Theprogrammefollowsasetdiscussionfromabookletthatthestudentsfillinandthefeedbackfromstaffandstudentshasbeenverypositive.Ihaveparticularlyenjoyedwalkingaroundandseeingtheconversationsthestudentswerehaving.IhavetocommendtheYear10studentsfortheirmaturitywiththeprogrammeandYear7fortheirhonestyintheirresponses.Thereisarealbuzzaboutclassroomsasstudentsarediscussinghowtheylearnbestanddevelopingactionplansonhowtomoveforwardeachweek.Itwasgreattoseegooddiscussionsaboutschoollifeinarespectfulenvironment.

Year 11TheAutumntermwasincrediblybusyforYear11.Afteralongandrestfulsummerholiday,allpupilswerefacedwithmeetingswithmentors,discussionsaboutgradespredictedfromYear10,resultsfromtheScienceandPEexamsandsettingtheirown‘outstanding’targetsfortheendofYear11toaddthatextrabitofchallenge.
AllsubjectdepartmentshaverequiredpupilstoputalotofeffortintotheircontrolledassessmentsandensuretheyweremostlycompletedbytheChristmasholidays.IhavebeentoldbyseveralHeadsofDepartmentthatthishasbeenextremelysuccessfulandtheoutcomeshavebeenmostlypositive.ThefinalchallengeYear11facedwasthefirstsetofmockexamsinDecember.Pupilscompletedtheseinthespaceoftwoweeks,somefoundtheexperienceashocktothesystemandultimatelyatimely‘wake-up’callheadingtowardsthesummer.
Ihavetosaythatmostoftheyeargrouphavemadeexceptionalprogress,whichbodeswellforthesummer.IhopethatthesamelevelofcommitmentandeffortisshownbyeverysinglepupilinYear11intheSpringterm.WearenowapproachingthefinishinglineandIamoptimisticthatYear11canbreakallpreviousrecordsforGCSE.

Year 9 Year9studentshavebeenbusylookingatpossiblesubjectoptionsforthestartofYear10andtheirGCSEs.
Theyhavecompletedarangeofactivitiesduringtutortimetoencouragethemtothinkabouttheirindividualstrengths,aswellastheirlongtermplansincludingcareers,collegesanduniversitytohelpthemmakeinformedchoices.StudentshavealsohadtalksfromtheConnexionsadviserandanassemblydeliveredbytheUniversityofManchestertoincreaseawarenessoffurthereducation.15luckyYear9studentsalsohadtheopportunitytoattendtheUniversityofManchesterinNovembertofurtherenhancetheirunderstandingofhighereducation.Studentshadatouroftheuniversityandanopportunitytospeaktostudentsaspartofaquestionandanswersession.AsimilartriptoChesterUniversityhasbeenorganisedforthestartoftheSpringTerm,whichwillfeature80Year9students.
InadditiontoalltheworkonGCSEoptions,Year9studentshaveagainhadtheopportunitytoshineviatheYearGrouprewardssystem.Eachtutorgroupnominatesa‘TuteeoftheFortnight’.Nominationscanbebaseduponarangeofcriteriaandsuccesses,fromacademictonon-academicandsustainedprogresstoimprovement.Eachstudentisthenplacedintoafortnightlyprizedrawwiththeopportunitytowinanythingfromvoucherstoacanofbakedbeans!Allnomineesreceiveapraisepostcardhome.Amassivewelldonetoallthenominees,andinparticulartoAlishaBhudia,RebeccaRileyandJackGriffiths.ThesestudentswonTraffordCentrevouchersof£25(Alisha),£50(Rebecca),and£75(Jack)inaprizedrawduringtheendoftermrewardcelebrations.Thetop50performingstudentswereincludedinthedrawfortheirconsistenteffortandhardworkthroughouttheAutumnTerm,andtheluckyaforementionednamesweredrawnatrandom.AlovelyearlyChristmaspresent!Finallyamassivewelldonetoallthestudentswhoachieved100%attendanceandpunctualityforthisterm,youwillbeenteredintoaprizedrawonthefirstweekback,andto9KJSwhowonthetutorcompetitionandwillreceivearewardbreakfastaftertheChristmasbreak.

Movingonfromthere,theirnextfunactivitywastheannualHalloweenDisco!Theeveningwasbrilliantandthepupilsdidnotletusdown,showingtheirfantasticarrayofcostumesincludingzombies,ghosts,batsandskeletonswithstaffalsojoininginwiththeirownscarycollectionofoutfits!6thFormersassistedinrunningthediscoandorganisingsidestallsincluding‘apple-bobbing’,‘namethedog’and‘pinthenoseonthewitch’!Prizesweregivenouttothebestdressed,sowelldonetoStanleyCameroninhisheadlesscreationandMilaanDaviesasabloodcurdlingZombie!ThenightwasfinishedbyawonderfulshowbytheYear7stotheirparentsofthe‘Thriller’dancechoreographedbyMissRichards.Ascarysightforsure!

Parent Staff AssociationWestartedthefundraisingthisyearinOctoberwithafamilyFunNightofbingoandquizzeswithover100parentsandassorted-sizedchildrenjoiningus,itwascertainlyafunsocialeventtostarttheyear.
RapidlyheadingtoChristmas,planningfortheChristmasFairandrecruitingstallholdersbeganmoreorlessstraightafterthis.AvisitfromFatherChristmasinhisvintagebuswastheicingonthecakeforourmostsuccessfulChristmasFairyetandthecoffersfromthesetwoeventsalonestandatjustover£4,000.Amassivethankstoallhelpers,parentsandfamilieswhocamealongtosupportusandespeciallytheYear10performerswhoentertainedeveryoneintheDiningHall.
ThePSAraisemoneytobuyitems,not
coveredbytheSchoolofficialbudgetthatwillbenefitourpupils.Hopefully,someofyouwillhaveseenthewonderfulbenchseatingaroundthesiteforyourselves,orheardaboutitfromyourchildren–boughtwithsomeoftheproceedsfrompreviousfundraisingyears.Ourtargetthisacademicyearistoraise£6,500andwelooktobewellonourway.Wouldn’titbefabuloustohavesomecanopiesovertheseatingtomakeitmoreweather-friendly?

Linkingintoourlessonontheconceptofsuffering(Dukka)welistedanumberofglobalexamplesofsufferinginthe21stcentury.Oncewehadourlist,thestudentswerethenaskedtoformulatethesetopicsintodebate-stylequestions.Studentsthenvotedonthetopicsthattheywishedtodiscuss.
Iwasoverwhelmedatthedepthofthoughtandconsiderationthatthestudentstooktoformulatethetopics,indeedwewerespoiltforchoiceanditwashardtopick.
Oncetopicswerepicked(3inonelesson)weallputourpensdownandsatinacircle.Wethenhadsomeveryintenseandfascinatingdebatesonsomeverytoughissues.Thematurity
andrespectshownbythestudentsmadeitanabsolutepleasuretoobserve-andobserveIdid,thestudentsjustranawaywithit!
Topicswedebatedincluded:

Exploring World Religions DuringREPlessonsintheirfirsttermatWellingtonSchool,Year7pupilshavechosentocompleteeitheraprojectorpresentationaboutoneofthesixmainworldreligions.
Theyhaveresearchedanumberofareasconnectedtoeachreligionincludinginformationabouttheirplacesofworship,festivals,foodanddresslawsandfamouscelebritiesthatfolloweachfaith.
Therehasbeensomefabulousworkproducedwithineachteachingsetandpupilshaveclearlytakenagreatdealoftimeandeffortwiththecontentandpresentationoftheirwork.
AspecialmentionmustbegiventoEvaQuested-LeechandHannahEl-QedehwhoproducedsomeofthemostwonderfulworkIhaveeverreceivedfromYear7.BothpupilsclearlyspenthourspresentingtheirworkandincludedlotsofdetailedinformationaboutbothHinduismandIslambutallexplainedintheirownwords.EvaalsodecoratedherworkwithHindutraditionalmaterialsandartwork.Atrulyfabulousproject.WelldoneEvaandHannah,youarebothREPsuperstars.

Wedding ceremonyThistermseveralYear10pupilsweredeclaredhusbandandwifewhenpartakinginatraditionalChristianweddingceremony;allpupilswereallocatedrolesandorganisedtheceremonythemselves.MrsJonesprovidedthecostumeswhichincludedbridesmaidandweddingdresses.Aftertheweddingceremonypupilsheldaweddingreceptionandenjoyedlisteningtotheentertainingspeechesmadebythegroomsmenaswellasthefatherofthebride.Theeventwaslavishlycateredwithallpupilscontributingsomethingtotheweddingbreakfast.Severalpupilsbroughtinfantastichomemadeweddingcakeswhichlookedandtasteddelicious.SpecialmentionsmustgotoShaneO’Connor,TomEaton,CharlottePilcher,EeshahAbdulrabandLauraMcLaughlinfortheirexceptionalcakes.

Thisceremonyaskspupilstoconsiderthebondsbetweenbrotherandsister.Pupilswereaskedtogettoknowtheirpartnersbetterandtofindoutabouttheirbestqualitiesaswellasthetrialstheyhavefacedinlife.Pupilsthendressedintraditionalclothes,anointedeachotherwithcumcumpowderandfedtheirpartnerasweet.MollyWilbrahaminYear8declaredthatthiswas‘thebestlessonever’.Allpupilstookawayabraceletthathadbeenmadeforthembytheirpartner.Ihopethatthisisalessonpupilswillrememberandtreasureforalongtime.

Trafford Youth for Christ DuringthishalftermKS3studentsparticipatedinlessonsrunbyTraffordYouthforChrist.Thelessonsfocussedaroundtheideasoffact,faithandbelief,friendshipandsuffering.Thelessonshavebeenaneye-openerforallstudentsinvolvedandhaveenabledthemtothinkdeeplyabouttheimportanceofrespectingbeliefs,valuingfriendshipanddiscussingtheoriginofsufferingaroundtheworldandhowwecancombatit.TheclassesthatwereinvolvedwerebrilliantandourvisitorsfromTYFCcommentedonmorethanoneoccasionhoweloquentandenthusiasticourstudentsare.Welldonetoallofthoseinvolved.

Year 11 Finance event Wednesday 14th October 2015Ohwhatcanwesay,theatmosphereinWellingtonwasabsolutelybuzzingontheday!DespiteYear11embarkinguponadifficultyear,theywholeheartedlyembracedtheFinancechallengesetforthembythisevent.
Thedaycommencedwiththestudentsbeingbombardedwithfinanciallingointhehall,aneye-openerforall,tosaytheleast.Theythenworkedintutorgroupstacklingabudgetingscenario(theseincludedsingleparent,unemployed,universitystudent,youngprofessionalandyoungfamily)whichculminatedwiththegroupspresentingtheirbudgetingideastotheyeargroupandapanelofemployers.
FinancialeducationisattheforefrontofmanynewgovernmentinitiativesandweprideourselvesatWellingtononprovidingourpupilswiththebest.FinalGCSEexaminationsarefastapproaching,sorememberYear11-betterqualificationsequalsbetterjobopportunitiesequalsaneasierfinancialsituationinthefuture!AhugethankyoutotheYear11tutorteamwhosupportedandencouragedtheirtuteesthroughouttheday.

Key 103 Apprenticeship Media Bus FollowingonfromourverysuccessfulCareersDayinOctober,wewereextremelyfortunatetowelcometheKey103ApprenticeshipMediabusintoschoolonceagainforthedayonThursday5thNovemberforourYear11and6thFormstudents.PaulaClifffromPositivesteps,EmmaJones,TrafficandTravelPresenterfromKey103andSamRostron,Key103StreetTeamweretheretorunthedayforus.
Four,onehoursessionstookplacethroughoutthedayandparticipationwasexcellentwithallstudentscontributingtogroupworkexploringApprenticeshipsaswellasindividualcontributions.
StudentswereadvisedabouthowApprenticeshipswork,whatisinvolved,whatqualificationsareavailable,aswellasprogressionroutesleadingonfromApprenticeships.
Theactivitiesincluded‘mythbusting’,apprenticeshipkeyfacts,scripting,recordingandeditingwhichculminatedinthestudentsdemonstratingwhattheyhadlearntbycreatinganadvert.EachgroupcontributedtoanaudioclipaboutwhatanApprenticeshipmeanttothem,beforecomingupwitha“tag-line”.ThiswasthenrecordedbySamfromKey103toformanadvertforApprenticeships.
Thestudentswereverypositiveabouttheactivitiesandconsidereditareallyusefulandworthwhileevent.

Year 11 Careers Fair and WorkshopsOnThursday15thOctober,Year11studentsparticipatedinacarouselofeventswhichincludedacareersfair,employabilityworkshop,apprenticeshipworkshopanda‘pathwaystofutureeducationworkshop.’
Theatmospherewasbuzzingwithstudentsdiscussingthevariouscareerroutesonthehorizon.Studentswereprovidedwithinvaluableadviceregardingtheirfutureoptionsandhadampletimeintheworkshopstoaskanyquestionsasandwhentheyarose.TheworkshopswerepresentedbystafffromNewEconomy,ManchesterCollege,UniversityofChester,UniversityofManchester,StockportCollegeandWellingtonSixthForm.Theyalsohadtheopportunitytochatmoreinformallytopeoplefromindustryandhighereducationregardingtheiraspirations.ExhibitorsincludedtheUniversityofManchester,TraffordCollege,ManchesterCollege,UniversityofChester,ReaseheathCollege,NHS,ArmedForces,AccesstoMusic,StockportCollege,FETAandalegalprofessionaltonamebutafew.
AllstudentswerealsoguidedthroughthedevelopmentandproductionofaCVwhichtheywilluseforlife.
Ahuge“ThankYou“toallwhotookpartforprovidingafantasticopportunityforourYear11students.
Andimportantly,thevisitorscouldn’tpraiseourstudentsenough(althoughthiscomesasnosurprise).Itwassoencouragingtoseethestudentschattingtogetherduringtheirfreetime,discussingwhattheirnextplansare.

Wellington Sixth Form News, Views and ReviewsTheyearstartedwitharesidentialvisittoLancasterUniversity,anopportunityforalloftheSixthFormtohaveatasteofuniversitylife.DuringthevisittherewasadviceforYear13onUCASapplications,personalstatementsandtimetobereflectiveonASresultsandgradesachievedwiththeviewtobuildingonthese.Year12hadtalksonrisingtothechallengesofALevelsandapproachestotakeintheirstudies.Duringalovelyeveningmeal,wehadchancetosing‘happybirthday’totheMinshulltwinsandlaterenjoyadiscowherethereweresome‘interesting’moves(mentioningnonamesMrsMoorhouse!)andabitofkaraoke,withastarturnfromourveryownChrisBennett!Quiteanight!Thewholeexperienceallowsstudentstogetausefulinsightintouniversitylife,understandskillsandexpectationsanduseittoapproachthestartoftheircourseswithpurposeandalooktothefuture.
Wearealwaysamazedbythegenerosityandempathyofour6thFormstudents.Althoughwewishwehadn’tneededto,thesupportfromourstudentsofafellowstudenthasbeenamazingtosee.LauraMcDonaghinYear13hasbeendiagnosedwithNonHodgkin’sLymphomaandourstudentshelpedrunacakesalesheorganisedinaidoftheTeenageCancerTrust.ThebakedgoodsmaderivalledanythingseenontheGreatBritishBake-off!Laurahasbeenincrediblypositive,braveandkeentosupportthecharitiesthatsupportotherpeoplewhoarefacingsimilardiagnoses.Year13alsohadacollectiontoensurethatahamperofgoodieswaswingingitswaytosupport,entertainandhelpLauraduringhertreatment.Laurahasbeenintoschool
anumberoftimestoupdateusonherprogressandcatchup.I’mpleasedtoreportthatsheisdoingincrediblywellandcan’twaittogetbacktoschoolandcontinueherstudiesandwecan’twaittohaveherbackwithus.
Fromearlyintheterm,manystudentshavebeenworkingasmentorswithlowerschoolstudents.TheirroleshaveincludedpairedreadingwithYear7,supportingstudentsinYear10withtherigoursofstartingGCSEcoursesandadvisingthemonhowtoapproachit.
Towardstheendofterm,interviewstookplaceandappointmentsweremadeforLRCMentors.Wewereencouragedbythenumberofapplicationsreceivedfortheseimportantpostsandreallydelightedthatsomanyofour6thFormerswanttosupportandruntheafterschoolsessionsandhomeworkclubintheLRCfrom3.05–4.05pm.Specialmentionmustgotoour‘retiring’LRCMentorteaminYear13whostepdowninordertofocusontheirALevelstudies.TheyreallyhavebeenthedreamteamandMrsWarecan’tthankthemenoughfortheircommitment,hardworkandreliability.They’llbeahardacttofollowbutwehavehighhopesforournewrecruitswhotakeuptheirdutiesinJanuary.
Allofourstudentshavesupportedthe‘ApprenticeChallenge’heldinSchoolattheendoflasttermforlocalprimaryschoolpupils,ensuringtheycompletethetasksandsupervisingtheirvisitto‘big’school.Year12and13arealsoprefectswhichisanotherpointofcallforyoungerstudentsatlunchtime.Allstaffandtheschoolappreciatethissupportasanothersetofeyesandears.ThankyousomuchforallthisadditionalhelpYear12and13,andweknowmanyofyoudoothersubjectbasedworktoo,helpingevenmorestudentsonadaytodaybasis.
AtthestartofNovember,MrBeeleywascontactedbythemotherofaYear8pupil,EmilyPeers(8SPR),aboutacharityworkingtohelphomelesspeopleinManchesterandrequestingsupportfromschoolwiththeircurrentproject.

Here’s a report from Holly Rundle about another enhancement Mr Cropper has organised for the Sixth Form:
“AllYear12studentslookforwardtolearningtodriveandpassingtheirdrivingtest,butitiseasyforustoforgetaboutthetruedangersofbeingontheroad.‘SafeDriveStayAlive’isacampaignrunbytheemergencyserviceswhichworkstowardsreducingthenumberofyoungdrivercasualties.Thecampaignaimstodothisbyinformingthefuturedriversofthedangersthatwecouldallbefacedwith.AllYear12studentswereinvitedtowatch(attheMiddletonArena)aseriesofreal-lifefilmclipsfrompeoplewhoseliveshadbeenchangeddramaticallyduetoroadtrafficaccidentsandtolistentodifferentmembersoftheemergencyservices,whospokeaboutoneoftheirmoststrikingexperiencesasaparamedic,policeofficer,firefighterornurse.Thiswasfollowedbyamothergivingherownaccountofhowhersondiedinacarcrash.Itwasacompletelycaptivatingexperience,whichevenledtosomestudentsbecomingemotionalatthetraumathatcanbecausedbyjustonetinydecisionthatyoumakewhilstdriving.Whetheritbeansweringatextmessageorarguingwithsomeoneinthepassengerseat,itwashighlightedtoallstudentsthatanythingcanwait;especiallywhenitisyourownlifeatrisk.Afterbeingshownavarietyofreal-lifevideos,allstudentswereencouragedtospreadthewordonsocialmediaabout‘SafeDriveStayAlive’becausetheseriousnessofroadtrafficaccidentswithyoungdriversissomethingthatwearesoquicktoforgetduringtheexcitementoffinallybeingabletodrive.Overall,thestoriesthatstudentsgottolistentowerecompletelyunforgettableandwilldefinitelycausethemtothinktwiceabouttheirdecisionsasanewdriver.ThankyoutotheorganisersforfundingthewholetripandtotheSixthFormtutors,aswellasMrCropperandMrsWilson,forencouragingallstudentstoattend.”

TheSixthForm,alongwithYear11andYear10tutorgroups,workedtogethertoraiseawarenessamongstourupperschoolpupilsandtotrytohelpwiththecharity’sChristmasShoeboxAppeal.Wetailoredthecontentsofourboxestobedistributedtovulnerable,youngpeoplelivinghomelessoverwinterinGreaterManchester.Pupilswereincrediblygenerousandwemanagedtofill30shoeboxesandcollectedextrasuppliestoo.Contentsrangedfromtoiletries,hairbrushesanddentalkitstokeyrings,torches,socksandwarm,woollyhats.BernadetteBakerfromthecharitycametocollectourshoeboxesonthe4thDecember–afterbeingoutuntil3a.mthenightbefore,distributingshoeboxgiftstohomelesspeopleinthecitycentre.WeknowfromMrsPeersthatsheworkstirelesslyforthecharityandwewereverygratefultoherforcomingintoschooltopickupourdonationsinperson.Shewasequallydelightedwiththeeffortsandgenerosityofourpupils.
Continuingourprogrammeoflookingafterthewellbeingofstudentswehavehadvisitsfromexternalspeakersraisingalcoholawareness.Respectingalcoholanditsconsumptionandbeingawareoftheconsequencesofalcoholabusewasexplained.Havingthefactsandinformation,ourSixthFormerscanmakeinformedchoicesandalsoknowhowtocontactagenciesshouldtheyneedfurthersupport.
ManyofourYear12studentstookadvantageofaseriesof‘DiscoverDays’attheUniversityofManchesterthroughoutNovemberandDecember.ThesedaysofferSixthFormerstheopportunitytogainrealinsightintodegreeprogrammestheymaywishtostudyatuniversity.Theyalsoprovideparticipantswithfirst-handexperiencetohelpthemmakeinformeddecisionsabouttheiruniversitychoicesbeforethestartoftheUCASapplicationprocess.Theformatofeachofthedaystypicallycombinesasubjectoverviewtalkwithcareersguidance,aminilecture,adepartmentaltourandaworkshop,withtimeforstudentstoputanyquestionsandqueriestheymayhavetoacademicstaffandcurrentundergraduates.OurYear12senrolledforDiscoverDaysinarangeofsubjectsincludingCriminology,Audiology,Engineering,LifeSciencesandSociology.Feedbackfromallthedayswasextremelypositive–interesting,enjoyableandgavethemseriousfoodforthoughtintermsoftheirpost-ALevelchoices.AnywhomissedoutthistermwillhavethechancetoregisterfortheUniversity’snextseriesofDiscoverDaysinSpring.
OthergreatnewsfromourUniversityofManchesterlinkscomesintheformofthesuccessof3ofourYear13studentswhowereacceptedontotheManchesterAccessProgrammeinYear12andpassedwithflyingcoloursinOctober2015.We’reveryproudoftheirhardwork,commitmentanddetermination.TheywerebrilliantambassadorsforWellington’sSixthForminthemannerinwhichtheyconductedthemselvesandthepositiverelationshipstheyforgedwithUniversitystaff.Asidefromtheirownpersonalachievements,thesatisfactorycompletionofallunitsandassignmentsinthescheme(inadditiontotheirstudiesinschool)meansthattheyeachbenefitfromareducedofferinordertosecureaplaceononeofthehighlycompetitivedegreecourses.Thiscanbeasmuchas3gradesloweri.e3‘B’sinsteadof3‘A’s.Awonderfuloutcome–ahuge‘welldone’tothemall!
Afterwrestlingwithpersonalstatementsandformcompletion,selectingcoursesanduniversitiesthelengthandbreadthoftheUnitedKingdom,offersarestartingtoflyinforourYear13studentswhohaveappliedforuniversity.AhugethankyoutoMrWilliams,MrAshworth,MrGershlerandMrWhitakerwhocollatedandwrotereferencesforeveryone,andofcoursetoMrCropperwhotirelesslychecksandhelpsstudentswithUCASglitches,requestsandapplications.IknowYear13appreciateallthishelpandsupportthatstaffgivethem.Tofurtheraidthetransitioninapplyingforuniversity,wealsohadavisitorinexplainingstudentfinanceforstudentsandanothersessiontohelpparentsunderstandtheprocesstoo.
The6thForm“didtheirbitinaChristmasknit”attheendoftermandraisedmoneyforMacmillan,SavetheChildrenandMakeaWish.Theylookedfestive,funandsparklyand,betweenthem,donated£220.83!!
