JISC

• Been in existence since 1993• Follett report 2000: “JISC is perceived as a

UK success story, providing a network of world-class standard and a range of excellent services”

• Informed by engagement with its communities

JISC: If it didn’t exist it would have to be reinvented! JISC is an example of a centralised shared service which provides economies of scale and is pro-active in promoting and delivering innovation across the higher and further education sector.

JISCMail (& Mailbase):• Launched in mid 1990s• Provided a sense of

community• People will to share &

help each other

Since 2003 significant drop in JISCMail usage. Many posts now announcements: jobs, events, …

Where is the community now?• We have the infrastructure (Social Web, syndication

& aggregation technologies, …).• We have the technical & information literacy skills• What’s missing?

Today….

Cuts, Cuts, Cuts

Context today:• Departments closing because they don’t

make enough money – e.g. Middlesex University example

• Quangos losing funding because they are regarded as inefficient (Becta?)

• Redundancies a real possibility• Decline in community, end to growth?• Where does this leave us?

Can we find a way out?

What Happens Now?

• Days of growth have ended• Web services will develop but with serious

constraints• One of the most important things now is

your professional social network: use the next 3 days to develop it!

• IWMW 2010 can help you to explore these issues

• Make sure you prepare yourself for the future

How IWMW Sees Its Role• Premier event for members of UK HE institutional

Web teams• Provide a forum for discussion, debate and sharing

of best practices for supporting HEIS in provision of institutional Web services.

• Ensure institutions are well-positioned to exploit innovations which can enhance their services.

• Provides a forum for JISC-funded developments to be shared across the community and for feedback to be obtained.

• Provide a cost-effective national service for the Web management community across UK HE sector.

But What of the Future?

Possible that cuts and changing priorities could see the sustainability of IWMW questioned

Should we: Stop doing it? Reduce length of event? Run it as a virtual or hybrid event? Allow commercial providers to provide

alternatives? Look for new business models (e.g. greater

sponsorship – the ‘Netsoft lecture’)?

Please tell us what you think during the event
