LOOK at the childrenAre their bodies clean?Are their clothes clean?Are they wearing shoes or sandals?Are their fingernails trimmed short?Are they putting dirty things in their mouths?LOOK at the householdAre there dogs, chickens, or pigs inside the house?ASK the motherDo you have soap?What kind of water do they drink?Do your children was their hands before they eat? And after they defecate [word choice?]?Where do your children defecate? Do they ever use a latrine?How often do your children bath? Do they use soap?Where do they sleep? If they are sick, do they sleep in the same place as the other children?Do your children brush their teeth?ADVISE the motherPoint out her good hygiene habits and encourage her to continue themExplain how cleanliness can prevent illness, especially diarrheaChoose the 2 most important hygiene habits she could changeExplain what to changeAsk how she feels about these changes, and if there are any reasons she would not change (for example, not enough money, cultural or personal beliefs, etc.)Explain why these changes will help to keep her children healthierGive her specific suggestions on how to make the changes On the next visit, ask if she has been able make the changes

HOUSEHOLD SHEETFact BoxChildren are more likely to be healthy when they are clean and their homes are clean.Teach your children to:Always to wash their hands after they go to the bathroom [choice of term?] and before they eat[IMAGE – hand washing, with soap suds]Bathe with soap, and wear clean clothes[IMAGE – washing a child, with soap suds]Use latrines [when they defecate – term to use?][IMAGE – child squatting over a hole]Wear sandals or shoes[IMAGE – foot with a flipflop on]Brush their teeth at least once a day[IMAGE – teeth being brushed]Do not put dirty things in their mouths[IMAGE – crossed out – child putting shoe or flipflop in mouth]To protect your children, you can:Only give them pure, boiled, or filtered water to drink[IMAGE – child drinking cup of water]Keep pigs, dogs, and chickens out of the house[IMAGE]Cut their fingernails very short[IMAGE – trimming fingernails with scissors]Make sure that a child who is sick does not sleep with other children or use the same clothing or towels[IMAGE – one child (sick-looking if possible) sleeping a few feet away from a group of 2-3 children]Treat sick children quickly so that other children do not get sick[IMAGE – medicine]Feed babies with a clean cup and spoon[IMAGE – ]
