Information Management, Technology, and Policy

-Information technology and related applications, ethics, and policy;

-Data security, information tools, citizen outreach through the use of technology, and related laws, policy, and rulemaking;

-Theories of information technology, dissent in government information sharing, the changes in information management policy, the structure of information systems, and the potential for information technology to create more efficient and sustainable systems delivery and communications;

-Information access, transparency, privacy, and equity issues and implementation, evaluation, and planning processes.

Course components

Student-led discussion/activities about texts;

Scholarship Project;

Living case study;

Individual presentations;

Participation

Student-led discussions/activities about texts

Email colleagues week before residency for focus points of discussion; Lead discussion/activities about texts during residency

Class scholarship project:Researching academic book chapter

Each student will contribute to a project for a future conference or academic publication relating to information technology.

Specifically, the Spring 2011 semester will focus on updating a 10-year old Pew study: Cities Online: Urban Development and the Internet.

Living case study

No more than four pages (not including cover page and references);

Times New Roman 11’ font with 1.5 spacing;

Interview at least one spokesperson relevant to the case;

Focus on decision-making cases using only the information provided in the case (without future data which might reveal what happened subsequent to the situation in the case).

(Topics to be cleared by teaching team during second residency)

Individual presentations

Ignite-type presentations about your case studies (cleared with teaching team);

Lead class discussion afterward.
