Main changes to National Curriculum
How we are planning to adopt and adapt the curriculum.
New Primary Curriculum from September 2014
But…
Next years Y2 and Y6 (present Y1 and Y5) start new curriculum in September 2015.
Mathematics
• Expectations set out year by year.
• Emphasis on whole class meeting expectations.
• Some expectations are now more advanced, for example children will be expected to be able to multiply fractions by end of year 6.
English
Programmes of study are set out for:
•Year One
•Year Two
•Lower Key Stage Two (Y3 and Y4)
•Upper Key Stage Two (Y5 and Y6)
Emphasis on reading for pleasure, grammar, spelling and spoken English.
Science
• Programmes of study for:
• Key Stage One
• Lower Key Stage Two
• Upper Key Stage Two
• Some new content, for example evolution, solar system. Greater emphasis on practical science and its application.
Other subjects…
• ICT now becomes computing.
• Design Technology - greater emphasis on application and lead in to engineering.
• Big and expensive changes in History and Geography!
Assessment
• No national assessment system;
• New SATS from 2016.
• We need to have our own system;
• Ofsted will test rigour of our system;
• Our system needs to show progress;
• ‘Below’, ‘Expected’, Exceeding’ milestones.
