Welcome to Ashurst Ward PICU

Who are we and what do we do?
Ashurst Ward is a psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) with
13 beds. We care for both male and female service users. We
specialise in caring for people with a range of mental health
challenges who, for a variety of reasons, may not be able to
cope with care on a standard acute mental health ward.
We aim to work with service users to enable them to recover
as quickly as possible so that they continue through the adult
mental health care pathway to reach their desired outcome.
On Ashurst Ward we work with you and with a range of
professionals in mental health care so that you are kept
up-to-date and fully in the picture regarding your care.
The care we offer includes:
individual one-to-one time with nurses
psychoeducation
medication
occupational therapy
psychological interventions
Your care will also include specific user centred interventions.

How we wish to be treated
The key to living and working together here on Ashurst Ward
is respect. Each of us is an individual who deserves respect;
we will not undertake any activity that diminishes us as a
person.
This applies to both service users and staff.
What does respect look, sound and feel like on
Ashurst Ward?
treating each other with compassion and kindness
not dismissing our individuality
assuming we have potential
feeling safe
no aggression or violence
knowing and understanding ourselves and each other
working with our limitations
saying “sorry” when it’s needed

Our service users say:
recognise I am not you, I am me
talk to me, not at me
teach me
involve me
listen to me even more
How we behave on the ward
We are all human beings - everyone should consider the
feelings of others and treat them how we would like to
be treated.
The staff will deal with patients’ requests in a timely and
efficient way and feed back on any progress.
Staff are willing to hear suggestions from patients.
Everyone should try to look after themselves, keeping
themselves clean and well dressed. Staff will assist
anyone who is unable to do so.
Welcome to Ashurst Ward PICU

Violence of any kind, including threatening others,
swearing or aggressive language, hitting or throwing
things, will not be tolerated. If you are feeling angry or
upset, politely ask to be left alone or walk away from the
situation. Please try to provide an explanation when you
feel calmer so that staff can help.
To help everyone feel safe and to assist in recovery, no
alcohol or non-prescribed drugs will be brought into the
unit.
Patients will have the opportunity to discuss their
feelings and thoughts with staff on a one-to-one basis.
Staff should wear ID in an appropriate place where
everyone can see and introduce themselves when on
the ward.
Nobody will use language which could cause offence to
others.
Leave requests will be accommodated as much as
possible. When they are not possible, an explanation will
be given and, where appropriate, an alternative time
offered.
Don’t forget: staff are here to help - you do not
have to deal with problems on your own.

Engagement and observation
From time to time, you may be experiencing high levels of
stress or distress while you are in hospital. To support you
and keep you safe we have four levels of observation:
Level 1: general observation
Staff will know your whereabouts.
Level 2: intermittent observation
Staff will enhance observation and engagement according to
your specific needs.
Level 3: within eyesight
Staff will ensure you are within eyesight.
Level 4: within arms length
This is to enable you to feel safe and to ensure that staff are
there to provide you with the support you need. The staff will
talk and listen to you and will help with levels of distress.
Ashurst Ward also has what we call the Extra Care Area
(ECA). This is an additional area with its own bedrooms and
lounge facility to enable service users to be supported off the
main ward if they display levels or distress that may
compromise their own or others’ safety and dignity.

Care planning and treatment
Assessment

discuss your needs.
Care planning
Your key nurse will develop a care plan with you to meet
these needs and help with your recovery while on Ashurst
Ward.
Treatments
Any treatments planned and delivered will be explained to
you so that you can make an informed choice. Where the
Mental Health Act is enacted, you will still be given all the
required information.
Safeguarding
Every person has a right to be and feel safe. The NHS and
Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust have policies and
procedures in place to assist in maintaining safety of both
adults and children from all types of abuse.
If you believe you or someone else may be a victim of abuse
please speak with a member of the ward staff or contact the
safeguarding team, Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS)
or the advocacy service.

Confidentiality
All professionals have a duty to protect your confidentiality.
They will not disclose any information to others outside of the
ward staff without your agreement. The only exception to this
is when there are significant risks such as child protection
issues or risks to you or others.
Driving
While you are an inpatient, you are advised not to drive. It is
your duty to inform the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency
(DVLA) and your insurance company of any changes to your
health and the treatment you are receiving.
For everyone’s safety (violence and aggression)
One of the challenges that lead service users to require the
speciality of a PICU is violent and aggressive behaviour.
You have told us that the services frustrate you and you
become frustrated when your needs are not met in a timely
manner. Sometimes this frustration spills over into aggression
and violence.
We believe that violence is not inevitable and it can be avoided
through clear communication and the correct treatment
programme. We cannot do this alone. We all need to work
together to stop violence occurring.
All of our nurses and occupational therapy team have been
specifically trained to minimise the likelihood of violence
Welcome to Ashurst Ward PICU

occurring. We have been trained in both talk down and
physical skills.
Should violence or aggression occur on the ward, we will
endeavour to resolve the incident in a manner that is
reasonable, proportionate and necessary in accordance with
the level of risk.
All of the ward community have recourse to the Criminal
Justice System, should they wish to take this route. You will
be supported post-incident should a violent or aggressive
incident occur.
Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS)
We aim to provide you with a high quality
service at all times. However, if you have
any concerns, complaints or comments
about your experience of our service, or
wish to liaise with someone outside of the
ward staff, then please contact the PALS
and complaints team.

advocacy services to help resolve issues or concerns you may
have while on the ward. The
advocacy is separate from staff
and Oxford Health NHS
Foundation Trust.

Spiritual and pastoral care
Chaplains are available on request and can come and visit
you on the ward. The chaplains offer:
consultation
assessment of spiritual
wellbeing
support for service users,
staff and carers
individual referrals and
group work

social inclusion - enabling links with faith communities
for individual service users
response to specific religious needs
The chaplains can also help you to work through difficult and
conflicting emotional responses to life events, for example
loss, guilt, hopelessness, anger and sadness.
The spiritual and pastoral care team offer a secure space
where you can explore the questions that emotional distress
and enduring illness can raise, for example:
Why am I suffering?
Why are things so difficult?
Is there a purpose to my life?
Am I a bad person?
If you would like to talk to a chaplain or member of the
spiritual and pastoral care team, please ask a member of the
ward staff.
