Why is Art important?

▪ Stimulates our mind

▪ Allows us to explore our creative side

▪ Art in any form entertains, informs, educates and enlightens

▪ Art stimulates both sides of the brain

▪ 33% of kids are visual learners

▪ There are studies that show that kids, who make art, read better and get better grades in science and mathematics

▪ The kids learn by using their senses and art is ideal in this process

Philosophy of Art Masterpiece

Art Masterpiece What a Lesson Should Look Like

▪ Discussion of the artwork: 10 min. max

▪ Process: 40-60 minutes

▪ Music: Introduce music as students are working

▪ Cleanup

▪ Students that finish early

▪ Discipline

Tips for keeping students engaged

▪ Keep the artist bio short. 5 – 10 minutes. Otherwise you might lose your audience. Students are eager to get started.

▪ Ask open-ended questions that begin with “Why do you think…”, “How…” to encourage interaction

▪ Consider a location change (Bio/Lesson on floor, desk for project)

▪ Relate the artist or the work to their own lives as much as possible. For example, find something that the artist did when they were the students age.

Large group answer ideas

▪ Thumbs up or thumbs down

▪ Rate on a scale from 1-5 (show fingers)

▪ Show me on your fingers how many ____ you see

▪ Turn to a neighbor and share
