Question of the Day?!?!
How do compare and order rational numbers?
1. Comparing Integers
1-3
5-7
You can compare and order integers by graphing them on a number line.
• Integers increase in value as you move to the right along a number line.
• They decrease in value as you move to the left.
Remember
Compare the integers. Use < or >.
4 is farther to the right than -4, so 4 > -4.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 –7–6–5–4–3–2–1 0
4 -4>
The symbol < means “is less than,” and the symbol > means “is greater than.”
Remember!
Use a number line to order the integers from least to greatest.
–5, 4, –3, 2, –1, –2
The numbers in order from least to greatest are –5, –3, –2, –1, 2, and 4.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 –8 –7–6–5–4 –3–2 –1 0
You Try!
ComparingFractions
Which is greater, or ?79
29
When two fractions have the same denominator, just compare the numerators.
79 > 2
9 because 7 > 2.
= 79
=29
Course 2
2-11 Comparing and Ordering Rational Numbers
Compare the fractions. Write < or >.
Additional Example 1A: Comparing Fractions
79
58
The LCM of the denominators 9 and 8 is 72.
79 = 7 · 8
9 · 8 = 5672
58 = 5 · 9
8 · 9 = 4572
5672 > 45
72 , and so . 79 > 5
8
Write equivalent fractions with 72 as the denominator.
Course 2
2-11 Comparing and Ordering Rational Numbers
Compare the numerators.
Additional Example 1B: Comparing Fractions
Compare the fractions. Write < or >.

–14 35
37– = –3 · 5
7 · 5=
–15 35
– 1435
> – 1535
, and so – > .25
– 37
Write equivalent fractions with 35 as the denominator.Put the negative signs in the numerators.
Both fractions can be written with a denominator of 35.
Course 2
2-11 Comparing and Ordering Rational Numbers
Compare the fractions. Write < or >.
56
78
The LCM of the denominators 6 and 8 is 48.
56 = 5 · 8
6 · 8 = 4048
78 = 7 · 6
8 · 6 = 4248
4048 < 42
48 , and so . 56 < 7
8
Write equivalent fractions with 48 as the denominator.

57– = –5 · 8
7 · 8=
–40 56
– 4256
< – 4056
, and so – < .68
– 57
Write equivalent fractions with common denominators.Put the negative signs in the numerators.
Check It Out: Example 1B
Both fractions can be written with a denominator of 56.
Course 2
2-11 Comparing and Ordering Rational Numbers
ComparingDecimals
To compare decimals, line up the decimal points and compare digits from left to right until you find the place where the digits are different.
Course 2
2-11 Comparing and Ordering Rational Numbers
Compare the decimals. Write < or >.
Additional Example 2A: Comparing Decimals
0.427 0.425
0.427
0.425
Since 0.007 > 0.005, 0.427 > 0.425.
Line up the decimal points. The tenths and hundredths arethe same.
Compare the thousandths:
7
5
7 > 5.
Course 2
2-11 Comparing and Ordering Rational Numbers
Compare the decimals. Write < or >.
Additional Example 2B: Comparing Decimals

0.733…
0.734
Line up the decimal points. The tenths and hundredths arethe same.
Compare the thousandths:
3
4
3 < 4.
Course 2
2-11 Comparing and Ordering Rational Numbers
0.73 =_
Since 0.003 is < 0.004, 0.73 < 0.734.
Compare the decimals. Write < or >.
0.535 0.538
0.535
0.538
Since 0.005 < 0.008, 0.535 < 0.538.
Line up the decimal points. The tenths and hundredths arethe same.
