Heart of the Valley Chamber of Commerce plans September events
Recently, I heard of another small business closing in our area and at first I was
completely shocked and saddened by the news, but then I was upset with myself. When was the last time I had stopped in and supported that business? I think that we are all guilty of being “too busy” and falling into the trap of the convenience of online shopping and next day delivery. But what impact does that have on our local businesses that support our communities?
Did you know that independent retailers return more than three times as much money per dollar of sales into the community compared to chain competitors? Also, Independent restaurants return more than two times as much money per dollar of sales than national restaurant chains.*
The customer service that you will receive by shopping, eating or using a local service is far more convenient than trying to deal with customer service in another country. Local businesses are owned and operated by your friends and neighbors! They care about and are invested in the well-being of our communities and the future.
The local businesses in our communities are Open For Business - and waiting to serve YOU! You can support the local economy by shopping at your local stores:
• Buy their products • Eat their food • Use their services
It is not always the easiest or most convenient option to visit a local independent business rather than a large national chain, but we challenge you to do so! These locally owned and operated businesses continue to support our communities by putting dollars back into the local economy through taxes, payrolls, purchases, donations and sponsorships! Support the businesses that work hard to support us! Let’s work together to avoid another business closing in our community. Be Loyal, Buy Local and Support Local Business!

What does it really mean to our local businesses and communities to shop local?
Kelli Clussman Executive Director
• For every $100 you spend at a local business, $68 will stay in the community.
• 89% of consumers agree that independent businesses contribute positively to local economies.
• Residential neighborhoods served by a successful independent business district gained, on average, 50% more in home values than their citywide markets.
• If just half the U.S. employed population spent $50 each month in locally owned independent businesses, it would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue.
• For every square foot a local firm occupies, the local economy gains $179 vs. $105 for a chain store.
