EASTER CARDS TO THE LATIN PATRIARCHATE OF JERUSALEMADDRESSES AND ADVICE FOR EASTER 2019

'This is a beautiful act of solidarity.' Fr David Neuhaus SJINTRODUCTION: Once again, we are encouraging parishes to send Easter cards to Catholic parishes and schools in the Holy Land, including parishes in Jordan, a less well-known part of the Holy Land and a place where people feel forgotten. In January and February, we received emails from priests thanking us for Christmas cards but saying that they had only just arrived. Realistically, it takes cards at least a month to reach their destination.Easter is on 21st April so the start of Lent would be a good time to organize the sending of cards.PROCEDURE: PALESTINE: Cards to addresses in the West Bank and Gaza should be posted as parcels of cards to the Patriarch’s office rather than directly to the parishes. Cards should be addressed to your chosen church/churches and then sent as a package to the Latin Patriarchate’s office from where they will be delivered to the parishes. For each of the last nine years, the thousands of cards sent using this method have reached the parishes and schools. By contrast, one Christmas card sent by post to Gaza in December 2017 arrived in September 2018.IN BRIEF:1. Explain the system to your parishioners2. Distribute lists of addresses3. Collect cards and sort into churches4. Write a note to each receiving church for the parish priest to read out to his congregation. This will help them to understand where the cards have come from and why they have been sent.5. Post all the cards together to the Latin Patriarchate’s office in Jerusalem.ISRAEL & JORDAN: Post direct to the parish/school address.ENDORSEMENT: “Thank you for your concern about the situation here. Believe me it is a really difficult situation. About the Christmas card I must to confess to you that it is a personal joy for me and for my parish to receive every year your cards. It is a joy to know that many people are concerning about our situation. So I advise, if it is possible, to continue to send the cards. But really if it is possible.” Fr Mario da Silva IVE, pp at Holy Family, Gaza.

REMINDER: INCLUDE YOUR CONTACT DETAILS ON THE CARDS

SEND ALL CARDS AND LETTERS TO: Mr Sami El-Yousef Chief Executive, Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, Jaffa Gate – Old City, P.O.B. 14152 9114101 Jerusalem The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem was established in 1099, after the First Crusade. When the Holy City fell to Saladin in 1187, the Patriarchate was transferred to Acre, and Cyprus, and finally to Rome. After more than six centuries, in 1847, Pope Pius IX restored the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. Today, the patriarchal diocese has about 70,000 members in four states: Israel, the Palestinian Authority, Jordan and Cyprus. (The full map is on the back page of this document behind the suggestions for the process of sending cards.)It covers a mosaic of cultures, languages, religions and traditions.

SUGGESTIONS FOR SENDING CHRISTMAS CARDSTO PALESTINIAN PARISHES

1. Provide cards and addresses.2. Ask your PP if you can explain the scheme to the parish. (Maybe

arrange to have a writing session after Mass)3. Parishes in the Holy Land really appreciate receiving cards. One

of their priests said: “This is a beautiful act of solidarity.”4. Choose a parish, or parishes, from the list. 5. Write your cards. 6. Write which parish you are from so that recipients know who has

sent them a card.7. If you wish, include the greeting in Arabic and English. (Provided

on separate sheet.)8. Ask your parish for a donation to cover the cost of cards and

postage.9. Place a small box at the back of church for people to leave cards

for posting.10. Send all cards in a parcel to:

Mr Sami El-Yousef Chief Executive, Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, Jaffa Gate – Old City, P.O.B. 14152

9114101 Jerusalem

13. The Post Office will help you weigh the parcels.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS IN ISRAELLATIN PATRIARCHATE OF JERUSALEM

This parish has thousands of parishioners, mostly migrants.

Jerusalem’s status is a sensitive & political question. The parish of Jerusalem is in East Jerusalem which according to international law is occupied territory, meaning it should be passed back to the Palestinians. When we separate Jerusalem, we acknowledge its status & highlight its importance as a unique & special Holy City.
