Description
In this short video, Minute Earth talks about how the air temperature rise has a big impact on the weather. First, the warmer the water at the surface gets, the more it vaporizes into the air. When the air gets warmer, it raises its capacity to hold water vapor, which means more rain and snow. This also means that the air over earth’s land is picking up more water than it used to, causing bigger droughts.

Description
“The Earth's climate is changing. Temperatures are rising, snow and rainfall patterns are shifting, and more extreme climate events – like heavy rainstorms and record high temperatures – are already happening. Many of these observed changes are linked to the rising levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, caused by human activities.
EPA partners with more than 40 data contributors from various government agencies, academic institutions, and other organizations to compile a key set of indicators related to the causes and effects of climate change. The indicators are published in EPA's report, Climate Change Indicators in the United States, available on this website and in print. Explore the indicators below.”

Mark Francek
Description
The article on the validity of the Death Valley 1913 record high is interesting, esp. inlight of recent measurements in the Lut Desert (in Iran) discussed in the 16 Dec 2016 issue of Science “Some Like it Hot”:- a ground team of researchers in July 2014 measured a "shade temperature" 61 C (almost 142 F) --a "shade temperature" being 30 centimeters above the surface in the shade of a wooden cylinder- the NASA Aqua satellite remotely measured a ground temperature there of 70.7 C (159.3 F) in the summer of 2005 -- the hottest satellite reading of ground temperature on Earth ever recorded (not counting volcanic stuff)
Those readings completely blow away the 1913 Death Valley measurement of 134 F -- whether it's valid or not. Apparently it is not uncommon for birds that happen to wander over the Lut Desert to fall dead from the sky.

Mark Francek
Description
1. 1. Carbon dioxide is rising as a component of Earth’s atmosphere (NOAA, 2017).
2. 2. The level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has not been this high for the past 5 million years (Stap et al. 2016).
3. 3. Beginning about 10,000 years ago and extending to the advent of the Industrial Revolution, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was roughly constant, indicating that natural sources were well-balanced by removals from the atmosphere (Fluckiger et al. 2002).
4. 4. The current rise in carbon dioxide is due to human activities, especially combustion of fossil fuels (Hofmann et al. 2009).
5. 5. Carbon dioxide is a “greenhouse” gas, inasmuch as it absorbs heat radiation leaving the Earth’s surface (Tyndall, 1865).
6. 6. There is a natural greenhouse effect on Earth, which keeps its temperature above freezing (Houghton 1986).
7. 7. Water vapor, methane and nitrous oxide also act “greenhouse gases” in the atmosphere, but the human impacts are greatest for CO2(Schmidt et al. 2010).
8. 8. Past period of high CO2 have been unusually warm (Luthi et al. 2008, Parrenin et al. 2013; Triparti et al. 2009).
9. 9. 2016 was the hottest year on record (Science 355: 331, 2017).
10. 10. Rising CO2 will affect the mean annual (not necessarily daily) temperature on Earth (Trenberth 1992).
11. 11. Mean annual temperature is an essential feature of climate (von Humboldt 1860).
12. 12. Different climate regions on Earth determine what crops we can grow, what diseases we experience, and how much water is available (von Humboldt 1860).
13. 13, Past changes in global climate have determined the position of sea level (Grant et al. 2012).
14. 14. Higher levels of CO2 in Earth’s atmosphere increase the acidity of seawater, making it difficult for shellfish to synthesize their shells (Ekstrom et al. 2014).
15. 15. CO2 is an essential component for plant photosynthesis, and it should increase the rate of growth of most plants—both crops and weeds—when other conditions are favorable (Taiz and Zeiger 1998).
16. 16. Measured increases in plant growth during the past few decades have been rather modest (Long et al. 2006; Groenendijk et al. 2015).
17. 17. Higher plant growth does not equate with greater carbon storage on land, as a way to mitigate rising CO2 in the atmosphere (Wieder et al. 2015).
18. 18. Higher temperatures are associated with greater occurrence of drought, which lowers plant growth (Rind et al. 1990).
19. 19. Drought is directly correlated to and a determinant of forest fires.
20. Drought, famine, and losses of soil fertility are implicated in the downfall of several historical civilizations (deMenocal 2001).

Using Cell Phones to Measure Weathering
Suggested By
Tom Gazda
Description
“I generally find cell phones to be a distraction in class. However, I'm open to using them if they can help students learn. I sometimes have student use them during the abrasion, AKA "rock shaking", lab. We have students shake different rocks in a jar with water in increments of 5 minutes for a total of 15 minutes. Students can take a photo of one particular rock (marked with an X using a Sharpie) before they begin. After the 15 minutes of shaking they compare that same rock to the photo and it can be striking how many the rocks has rounded due to abrasion. This is a good use of cellphones, though students are not good at capturing good photos of the rocks (which admittedly is difficult to do).
Also in Applied Physics I often use the slow motion setting to capture objects falling and hitting the ground. The newer iPhone have 240 frames per second slow-motion, which is quality slow-mo.”

Yet between 2000 and 2009, the more mozzarella that Americans downed, the more doctorates in civil engineering that U.S. universities awarded. Over a 10-year period, as levels of one went up, so did the other. The two showed a strong positive correlation. Yet almost certainly this happened by coincidence. One did not cause the other. This shows an important point about statistics: Correlation is not the same thing as causation — showing that one thing caused the other.” Read the article to learn more.
