Web 2.0 and PLNs

Developing a 'Personal Learning Network‘

Darcy Moore

By the end of the session...

We will have considered:• Web 2.0 tools that enable us to

communicate, create, collaborate and connect

• the concept of a 'Personal Learning Network' (PLN)

• the way forward…(at your school?)

WEB 2.0

DO YOU GET IT?

Just checking…

• Web 2.0 – what does it mean to the person sitting next to you (definition)?

• How do they really feel about ‘the internet’ (as an educator)?

• How many hours do they spend online per week?

• Have they ever viewed Dr Michael Wesch’s video: The Machine is Us?

Building Planes (as they fly)

VIDEO

Participatory Media• Web 2.0 is about participation and

community

• Our participation is essential if students are to get the full benefit of ‘learning devices’ and wireless connectivity

• All the tools are basically free (and fun)

• We will continue to learn while ‘building planes’

Just checking…

• Please complete the handout…

What is a PLN?

RSS Feeds & Google Reader

Social Bookmarking

Blogging

My Blog

• Has become an important part of my PLN

• My blog is personal and professional

• Other educators follow me on Twitter and see my updates, have an RSS feed on my blog and are part of my ‘Delicious’ network

• Increasingly they are on

• We know and trust each other

Micro-blogging

What are you doing?

"We teach others by teaching ourselves anew."

Garth Boomer

The way forward…• If every staff member was able to use

Google Reader, Delicious & Twitter with many leaders blogging, ongoing formal and informal learning could be shared

• Collaboration would lead to the dispersion of new tools and ideas throughout the system

• The individual would be at the centre of their learning

What if…• The staff of each region LEAD learning using

Web 2.0 concepts to collaborate?• All of you were connected with RDs, SEDs,

principals, DPs and APs using the tools discussed?

• Senior executive sharing this in their schools?• Our regions going 2.0 and supporting this in

schools?• Your two new SDD days late in 2009 supporting

staff with ‘a package’ after some trials in terms 2 & 3?

Teacher-Librarians

• What if the librarians at every school supported their Principal and teaching colleagues to collaborate using these tools?

2009 ISER PlanJust a reminder, this connects to our plan to •Assist communities of schools to use technology as a means of communication and curriculum sharing•Implement professional learning in innovative teaching practice using technology•Promotion of networks•Workshops for teachers using Connected Classroom and other technologies

Disclaimer

I have a vested interest in all this waaay beyond my role as a DP in the ISER...

2009 - 2022

My daughter Lucy has commenced Kindergarten at her local state school and graduate in 2022; if all goes well.

2009 - 2022

What will her personal experience of school be like?

The future?

• Will she always feel like this about school?

Sarah will graduate in 2025

...and in 2028

Darcy will retire; if such a concept still exists

Ways of Seeing

"The real voyage of discovery consists not in having new landscapes, but in having new eyes."
