Wavelength Properties of Energy
Comparing Wave Properties & Energy
Essential Standard
• 6.P.1Understand the properties of waves and the wavelike property of energy in earthquakes, light and sound waves.
Clarifying Objective
• 6.P .1.1 Compare the properties of waves to the wavelike property of energy in earthquakes, light and sound.
Essential Question
• How are Earthquake waves, Light waves, & Sound waves all alike??
• How are waves created?
• What is light?
• What is sound?
• What is a Seismic Wave?
Waves Transmit Energy
• Waves transmit energy & not matter
• Waves are simply a way for energy to go from one place to another (moving energy)
• Think of a roller coaster: the energy is you in the coaster & the wave is the track that moves up & down
Energy Vibrations
• Energy causes materials to VIBRATE
• These vibrations are carried on waves
• These waves transmit/transfer energy from one place to another
Essential Question
• Get with a partner and answer…
• How are waves created?
Waves Travel through Matter• Almost all waves travel through
some type of matter
• Matter that waves have to travel is either a
① Solid② Liquid ③ Gas
• The only type of wave that does not have to travel through matter is an ELECTROMAGNETIC (light wave) WAVE which can travel through a vacuum
Earthquake Energy
• All an Earthquake is ENERGY moving through a solid
• The energy of the Earthquake travels on a wave
• Earthquake energy is called SIESMIC WAVES
Earthquake Energy
• Earthquakes use Longitudinal waves to move through the land (solid)
• Sometime the energy of the Earthquake is so great that it splits the land in two
Longitudinal Wave
• Earthquake energy travels in Longitudinal waves through a solid
• The energy moves on the wave because of compression & rarefaction repeating itself similar to a SLINKY
Seismic Waves

Essential Question
• Get with a partner and answer…
• What is a Seismic Wave?
Sound Energy
• Sound Energy also travels on a Longitudinal Wave
• Sound Energy however can travel through all three types of matter– Solid – Liquid– Gas
Sound Energy
• Sound Energy begins to travel when there is some type of VIBRATION
• This VIBRATION travels through either a solid, liquid or gas
Sound Energy
• Sound Energy bumps the vibration into PARTICLES (particles make up the solid, liquid, or gas)
• The particles continue to bump into each other passing the sound energy on through a longitudinal wave
Essential Question
• Get with a partner and answer…
• What is a Sound Wave?
Light Energy
• Light Waves (Electromagnetic Waves) are Transversal waves
• They move energy up and down through space
• Light Waves (Electromagnetic Waves) can but do not have to move through a medium
Light Energy• Light waves (Electromagnetic
Waves) are the only forms of energy that can travel through a vacuum
• This means that light is the only form of energy that can travel through outer space is light energy which
• It is important to remember that energy from the sun is light energy (Electromagnetic Energy) and must pass through a vacuum
Essential Question
• Get with a partner and answer…
• What is light?
Essential Question

EOG Questions
• How are earthquakes, sound, and light waves alike?
• A) They transmit energy.
• B) They carry matter.
• C) They travel in space.
• D) They can be seen.
Important Points
• Energy causes materials to vibrate
• The energy is carried on waves
• Energy must travel through a medium in all instances except one (light energy)
• Mediums include solids, liquids or gases
• Earthquake energy has wavelike properties (Longitudinal)
• Sound energy has wavelike properties (Longitudinal)
• Light energy has wavelike properties (Transversal)
