Warm-Up!

Pick up an article on your way in! Read and annotate the articleAnswer the 6 questions at the end

of the article when you are finishedYou have just 15 minutes to be fully

completed starting when the bell rings

Objective:SWBAT explain why biodiversity is important in the biosphere.

What is the biosphere?

The biosphere is all life on Earth

What is biodiversity?Bio means: lifeDiversity means: varietyPut the two together, and you get:

Variety of Life or Biodiversity

Interdependence

Interdependence: Every species is linked, directly or indirectly, with others in an ecosystem.

Plants provide food, shelter, and nesting sites for other organisms.

Many plants depend upon animals for help in reproduction (bees pollinate flowers, provide nutrients (such as minerals in animal waste products).

All animals are part of food webs that include plants and animals of other species

Food Chain: sequence of what eats what in an ecosystem to obtain nutrition

Trophic Levels:The trophic level of an organism is the position it holds in a food chain.

Producers – an organism that makes its own food (plants)

Consumers – an organism that gets energy by eating other organismsHerbivores – plant eatersCarnivores – meat eatersOmnivores – plant and meat eaters

Tropic Level 1 - Producer

Tropic Level 2 - Primary Consumer

Tropic Level 3 - Secondary Consumer

Tropic Level 4 - Tertiary (Third) Consumer

.

Exit Ticket
