War Poetry Essay(Some information to help you with your writing.)

A good website to use is the Online Writing Lab, http://owl.english.purdue.edu/ .

ThesisThesis = topic + opinionYour thesis should not be broad;

it should be narrow and specific. The thesis should answer the

reader’s question(s): “Why am I reading this paper? What am I reading in this paper?”

OrganizationYou will need to make sure your

paper flows well. ◦I already laid out for you the basics

of what you need to write about.◦You just need to decide where the

paragraphs should go logically.

QuotingWhen you quote a single line of poetry,

write it like any other short quotation. If the piece of poetry you are quoting

crosses multiple lines of the poem itself, you may still type them in your text run together. ◦Show the reader where the poem's line

breaks fall by using slash marks.◦Ex: In his poem, "Mending Wall," Robert Frost

writes: "Something there is that doesn't love a wall,/ that send the frozen-ground-swell under it."

QuotingIf the quotation is three lines or longer,

set it off in a block quotation.Quote the poem line by line as it appears

on the original page. Do not use quotation marks, and indent one inch from the left margin.◦ In his poem "Mending Wall," Robert Frost

questions the building of barriers and walls:

Before I built a wall I'd ask to know What I was walling in or walling out, And to whom I was like to give offense.

Lead-in PhrasesIneffective:

◦Here's a quote which shows this: “◦Paul tells Tjaden, “

It should be clear to the reader what the quotation means and why it's important (to the point you're trying to make in that paragraph).

Comma or Colon?A colon is used to introduce a

quotation following a full sentence, as in the following example:◦Atticus uses the incident with Mrs.

Dubose to teach Jem a lesson about courage: "Courage is when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what" (112).

Use a comma if you don’t have a independent clause.
