Walter’s Story Mr. Walter Lee Johnson was born on July 21, 1929 to
the late Charlie and Eva Mae Johnson in Acworth,
Georgia. He was the second child of four children born
to this union.
Walter was educated in the Cobb County School
System attending C.A. Roberts Elementary School in
Acworth, Georgia. In the fifth grade he had to leave
school to help his parents work in the fields. Walter
met and married the love of his life Mary Lorraine
Echols and to this union twelve children were born. As
the family grew Lorraine gave him the nick name “WL”.
With a fifth-grade education, Walter started volunteer-
ing as a Firefighter and then in 1959 he became ac-
tively employed by the City of Acworth making him the
first African-American police officer for the City of Acworth. After several years of
employment Walter earned the rank of Corporal. He was popular among his fellow
officers and they gave him the nickname of “Super Spook” which also happened to
be his “handle” on the CB radio. Walter served on the Cobb County Board of Com-
missioners and various other committees. After thirty-six years of service Walter re-
tired from the City of Acworth Police Department. He couldn’t sit down just yet, he
went to work for the best dealership in town Days Chevrolet as a security guard. Af-
ter the passing of his wife in 1995, Walter decided to move his family to Cartersville
Georgia where he spent his time doing what he loved, spending time with his family,
gardening, placing bird baths throughout his yard, growing flowers, and playing with
his dog “Question”.
He is preceded in death by his wife Mary Lorraine; children, Carey, Little Walt, Rob-
in, Jacqueline and Baby Johnson; parents Charlie and Eva Mae Johnson; brother,
Charles Johnson and sister, Rosa Mae Rice.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory, children, Rosalyn (Marlow) Bailey, Peggy
Slocum, Marilyn (E.L.) Callahan, Carolyn (Lamar) Johnson, Victoria (Claude) Kellogg
Durham, Robert (Mary Ann) Johnson and Candace Johnson; twenty-nine grandchil-
dren, fifty great grandchildren, fifty-one great-great grandchildren, two great-great-

In tears we saw you sinking
And watched you fade away.
With heavy hearts we wanted you to stay
But when we saw you sleeping,
So peaceful, free from pain.
How could we wish you back
To go through that again?
It broke our heats to lose you,
But you did not go alone.
For part of us went with you
The day God took you home.
We Love You Daddy
