Volunteering at Purdue’s “Plant Info To Go” Booth

at the Indiana Flower and

Patio Show

Parking• $8.00/vehicle to park

• “Plant Info to Go” booth located in Exposition Hall.

• You can enter:• Gate 3, if traveling

east on 38th St.• Gate 1, if traveling

west on 38th St.• Left turns into the

fairgrounds may not permitted depending on the day.

• Park Here

• Allow plenty of time for arrival.

The Purdue “Plant Info to Go” Booth staffed by

Purdue Extension Master Gardeners

(EMG) is located in Exposition Hall,

The Booth

Aprons The Flower & Patio show has very

graciously provided aprons bearing the Purdue EMG logo for EMGs to wear while working in the booth.

Please wear an apron while working in the booth.

These aprons are PURDUE property. Before leaving the booth; return them to the booth. They are NOT for sale.

Computer

The computer is provided to serve a tool for you to provide information for visitors.

The computer has a live internet connection.

Please do not allow the public to use the computer.

The Computer Purdue EMG Program staff and/or one of our

designated EMG volunteers from Marion or Hamilton Co. will open the booth each morning and start the computer.

Computer Problems??? If the computer should stall or seem

otherwise unresponsive… Restart the computer; press and hold

the power button until the computer shuts off (about 10 seconds).

Wait approximately 5 seconds, then press the power button again to restart.

If prompted, select “Start Windows Normally”.

Follow instructions provided in the booth to log-in

Firefox should automatically open to our Consumer Hort Home Page for Indiana Flower and Patio Show.

We have created a special home page that will automatically load when the computer is started.

Emailing Publication Web Links

The Purdue Plant Info to Go Booth has gone green.

A printer is no longer available in the booth.

Master Gardeners may offer to email web links for Purdue publications to show patrons.

Step 1: Ask the show patron for their email address.

Step 2: While on the website of interest, copy the website address.

Step 3: Click on the next browser tab to open the email form.

Step 4: Enter the show patron’s email address into the appropriate field.

Step 5: Enter the show patron’s state (drop down menu with all states).

Step 6: If they reside in Indiana, select their county (drop down menu with counties).

Step 7: Paste the website address into the appropriate field. More than one website address can be added to this field if needed.

Step 8: Click on the arrow button to send the email with the web link.

Reference BooksThe Purdue Master Gardener Manual and other reference books are available for your use at the booth only! Please do not let anyone borrow them.

Purdue Master Gardener Program Information

Please distribute the Master Gardener brochure (HO-184) to those interested in the Program.

Write the phone number of their local county extension office on the brochure.

A list of counties with MG Programs and their office phone numbers will be available in the booth.

Give-AwaysWe have Purdue Consumer Horticulture/Purdue Extension Master Gardener magnets to give out to visitors. We also have plastic bags for those who request them.

Answering Questions

Use Purdue MG Manual, references, and internet to answer questions.

If you cannot answer a question, it is okay to say I don’t know, but then direct them to their Purdue Extension Office and give them the phone number (see phone list handout).

Tracking Visitors

In an attempt to record impact, we would like to have an approximate count of visitors to the booth.

Please keep a tally each day. Tally sheets will be available in the notebook for your use.

Tracking Visitors Simply open the Notebook to the appropriate day

and shift, and follow the instructions to record your daily visitors on the tally sheets provided.

iPad with Purdue Plant Doctor & Midwest Trees of Indiana Apps

Our booth is furnished with an iPad to showcase the Plant Doctor apps from Purdue – Tree Doctor, Perennial Doctor, Annual Doctor, Tomato Doctor, and Turf Doctor as well as the Midwest Trees of Indiana App.

The iPad is securely mounted in a locked case. Please encourage the public to play with the

apps. Direct visitors to capture the displayed QR code

for further information.

Additional Volunteer Instructions • Please do not distribute additional promotional flyers,

information, or items that have not been approved by the Purdue Extension Master Gardener State Office.

• Additionally, we ask that Purdue Extension Master Gardener volunteers working in the booth refrain from posting additional promotional banners or signage.

• The Purdue “Plant Info to Go” booth is not a commercial exhibit. Therefore, Purdue Extension Master Gardeners should not engage in sales of any kind from the exhibit.

End of the Day

• Purdue EMG’s staffing the booth during the last shift can just close the laptop

• Leave laptop and iPad on the counter, they are secured with cables.

Place reference materials, handouts, and magnets in cabinets. The back cabinets are not locked, just pull open from the bottom.
