PROGRAMME
Joint Meeting with Clubs of Zone 3 To celebrate Dussehra with Shero Shayari
Date: September 29, 2017 (Friday) | Time: 6.15 p.m. Venue: Hotel Shivalikview, Sector 17, Chandigarh
Shradhanjali to our Charter President Late Dr. B.D. Gupta
In our regular meeting on September 22, 2017 President
Rtn. Dr. Rita Kalra requested our senior most Past
President Rtn. B.L. Ramsisaria to pay „shrandhanjali‟ to
our Charter President (First President in 1977-78), Dr.
B.D. Gupta who passed away on September 17, 2017.
PP Ramsisaria paid rich tributes to Dr. B.D. Gupta with
whom he had 42 years of friendship, which started from
Frankfurt airport in Germany, where they both had met
for the first time, and came to know about each other,
and also that they both belonged to Chandigarh. After
that they used to meet practically every day, and also
shared their common interest in Indian classical music.
In Dr. Gupta‟s demise, not only we have lost our Charter
President, but India too has lost a doctor of great
eminence. In our club he was closely associated through
his prestigious Home Care Nursing project.
Born in 1934 in Agra, Dr. Gupta did his MBBS from the
Medical College, Agra. After that, he went on to do his
post-graduation in radiology (combined radio-diagnosis
and radiotherapy). He obtained his FRCR degree from
London and later, came back to India to exclusively
practice radiotherapy and oncology.
For a short period of time, Dr. B.D. Gupta worked at the
All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New
Delhi. After this he joined the PGIMER in 1971 and set-
up the world class Radiotherapy Department in PGI.
About 10 years ago when PP Ramsisaria took his wife
Late Sulochana for cancer treatment to Tata Hospital in
Mumbai, there he was adviced to go to the Radiotherapy
Department in PGI which has all the facilities as
available in the Tata Hospital. This speaks a lot about Dr.
Gupta‟s contribution to this Department in PGI.
One minute silence was observed in the meeting as a mark
of respect and to pay homage to Late Dr. B.D. Gupta.
Lifestyle diseases: It’s your life profile that matters
President Dr. Rita Kalra welcomed the chief guest Dr.
Manjushree Sharma, and remarked, “With the start of
festival season, we want to take care of our health and
stay healthy.” A presentation of management of life style

diseases was given by Dr.
Manjushree, who was
earlier a Rotary Ann of our
club, and she will become
R‟ann again. Her husband,
Dr. Anurag Sharma, an
expert Cardiologist, who
left our club two years ago
due to his professional
constraints, is likely to re-
join our club very soon.
Dr. Manjushree Sharma was formally introduced by
Rtn. Dr. Rajinder K. Sharma. Manjushree did her
MBBS in 1994 from Govt. Medical College Patiala,
Post Graduate Diploma in 2006 in Preventive &
Promotion Health care from Apollo Hospital,
Hyderabad. In 2008 she did her Masters in Hospital
Management from Osmania University Hyderabad and
stood first in all the four semesters. She is now Asst.
Professor at Institute of Applied Management Sciences,
Panjab University, Chandigarh. From 2009 she has been
imparting training in Hospital Administration to the
medical officers of Haryana Civil services. She has
presented number of papers and has been invited for
lectures at different national and international venues
and has number of publications to her credit.

Vote of thanks by

Dr. Rajinder Sharma had made a candid observation that being
dominated by buearucracy, doctors cannot become good
administrators. However, he clarified that there are some
exceptions, and our President Dr. Rita Kalra is one such doctor
who is a capable administrator.
In her impressive presentation Dr. Manjushree Sharma stated,
“India is no longer a poor country. We have entered the elite of
the western world.” But this has also brought to us some lifestyle
diseases which are fatal.
61% of deaths in India are because of Non-communicable
diseases (NCD). 23% of population in India is at risk of pre-
mature death from NCD. Cancer, Diabetes and Heart disease
account for 55% of premature mortality in age group 30-69 years.
PP R.K. Luther presents a memento to Dr. Manjushree
Sharma. Looking on are Dr. Anurag Sharma, President
Dr. Rita Kalra and Secretary Rtn. Jeeten Bhambri
Cardiovascular diseases (coronary heart disease, stroke, and hypertension) contribute to 45% of NCD deaths. She
highlighted the various aspects of lifestyle diseases like stress, hypertension, obesity and metabolic syndrome. She said
Indians are amongst the laziest in the world! A 46 country study at Stanford has shown that we are ranked at 39, with
people averaging just 4,297 steps a day. Rampant westernization of our diet, refined food epidemic, food adulteration
and pollution also contributes to NCD. Another glaring fact pointed out by Dr. Manjushree is Psycho-social stress.
Young people are depressed, alone, and ignored. Those who are working are overworked and stressed. Old people are
depressed, being alone and ignored.
Stress leads to moderate risk of developing cardiovascular disease, even if you don‟t smoke and do not consume
alcohol. Dr. Manjushree adviced to get the risk factors evaluated, find out your risk category and plan your lifestyle accordingly. She concluded with remarks, “Wishing you good health, and wisdom to put that to good use.”
