First, let me say that preparing for thisdemonstration was a bit different than theothers I have done. Loading up myShopsmith in the back of my pick-up wasthe tip of the iceburg when it came topreparing for this demo. All club demo’s take preparation, andunless you have done one, you can nevertruly know, and appreciate, the work thatgoes into it. This one, though, was a bitdifferent. My Shopsmith, and the accessories I useto turn it into a lathe, are not quite the sameas a regular lathe. The tool rest is different, the tailstock is different, I need to put theentire machine on blocks for the rightheight, and hoping that I didn’t forget a partor tool I needed was always on my mind. Ican go on and on. Also, I hadn’t used my Shopsmith to turnwood for quite a while (I now use myLaguna Tools lathe), and there is a learningcurve when it comes to using this machine. Iwanted to make sure I had everythingcorrect for the demo, so I turned two otherplatters leading up to the demo on myShopsmith. The first one seemed to takeforever, the second was a bit better, so Ihoped for the best when I got to the meeting. When I arrived everyone seemed veryinterested in the machine and I had plenty of

MEETING START TIME10:30 am

Tye Putman opened the meeting at10:30 am. We now have another new member:Gordon Miller. Guests in attendance: Doyle Rogers,Mike Cavanaugh, and Joe Smith. Club President Tye Putman openedmeeting at 10:30 am and noted that wehad more members and guests inattendance at this meeting than we havehad for some time. It seemed that it wasstanding-room only. Not sure if the largenumber in attendance was a result of thismeeting starting an hour later than usual, but it seemed to be a major contributingfactor. Tye talked about the upcomingprofessional woodturning demonstrationsto be hosted by Alan Lacer and JimmyClewes. Tye also let everyone know thatlunch will be included if you reserve yourseat early. Chuck Smith and Howard Atamianreported on the Veteran’s Cane Projectthat we will again participate in with thelocal wood carving club. They explainedthe details of how to make the canes, andpassed out plans for the correct sizes, etc.Member Kevin Conner again donated thewood to be used in turning the canes. We had a visit from the Fowler Librarymanagement. They showed us an antique

help getting it out of my pick-up and gettinginto the meeting room. A lot of membersbegan to ask me questions about theShopsmith and I was happy to tell them all Icould. When it came time to start my demo, I wasa bit nervous at first, hoping that theShopsmith wouldn’t hinder the demo I hadplanned. Everything started to go smoother asI went along and my Shopsmith didn’t let medown, and I didn’t forget any of theaccessories and tools I needed. Everyoneseemed very interested in how the Shopsmithworked in comparison to other lathes, not tomention the several methods I showed in howto turn a platter. I had a great time doing this demo, and Iencourage all members to give it a try.

telephone that was in the original Fowlertrain depot. The Library is built as areplica of the original Train Depot andseveral antiques from the era of theoriginal depot are on display. MemberGordon Bone volunteered to make adisplay case that will house the phone inthe Library, and the club will be donatingthe materials and cost for the display case. Member Dave Davenport showed uspictures of a replacement knob madefrom wood for wheel chair controller/joysticks. He wanted to know if the clubmembers might be interested in helpingmake them as a community project.Further discussion will take place atfuture meetings. Stan Stevens began collecting dues for2012. Club Treasurer Craig Miller read theTreasurers report. We have $4433.40 inthe account prior to collection of the 2012dues. Club Librarian Mike Cunninghamspoke about the clubs 110 volume videocollection. He emphasized that borrowersmake sure that they return the videos atthe following meeting. That gives youtwo months to enjoy one of the manygreat benefits of membership. MikeCunningham also volunteered tospearhead the group purchase of PepperMill Mechanisms. Joe Smith (a new member) volunteeredhis time to be our new website manager. He has lots of experience and we all needto thank him for his support. Tye finished up with all the standardbusiness of the day and after a break itwas on to Scott Hampton’s demo onPlatter turning.

Scott picked a nice piece of greenSycamore he got from a friend in Florida. The blank was about 14 inches indiameter. He turned on a Shopsmith, which is a bit different than most are usedto when it comes to lathes. He cleaned up and balanced the blankand turned to about ¾ of an inchthickness. Scott put more effort into thispiece while it was being turned because itwill be dried before finish turning, alsocalled twice turned. He used manydifferent tools to show members severaldifferent methods that we can use to makeour own platter. It was a very interesting demo as thechallenges of mounting, tailstock andchuck use are different using aShopsmith. All appreciated the wellprepared and executed demo. After thedemo the meeting moved on to Show andTell. We then moved on to this month’s clubchallenge. Eight members participated. The raffle conducted by Terry Gillilandwas great with several membersparticipating and several great prizes won. Tye closed the meeting at 2:30 pm. Itwas action packed from beginning to end.I only hope I did not leave anything out inthis report.

Hello Everyone, Hope you are all doing well. At the lastmeeting in January we had to adjust to thenew 10:30 am start time. Withapproximately 44 members attending, itseemed to bring more members out to themeeting. Thanks to all who attended andfor understanding the library’s economicchallenges. Thank you Scott Hampton for a greatdemo on platters while using yourShopsmith. I think everyone enjoyedseeing your method of turning that platter.Show & Tell and the Club Challenge werealso very interesting. Terry Gilliland gaveout nice prizes for the challenge and raffle(don’t forget that March’s Challenge is aturned project that includes a “hubcap”). Inoticed Perry Coy was working hard on therefreshments. Everyone seemed to enjoythem so thank you Perry. In February Allen Lacer and his wifeMary passed through Fresno and gave anawesome demo at Ideal Saw. We picked upthree new videos from Allen for our clublibrary. That was a tuff show to follow.Coming back for his third time was JimmyClewes. Again Jimmy entertainedeveryone to the fullest with his wizardry atthe lathe. Kevin Conner donated somegreat materials for both of these demos. Bythe way, he has more for sale for any of youwho are interested. A huge thank you toScott Hampton for a great video/audiopresentation!This month our own Greg Miller will talk/demo on segmented turning.Reminders:· We start at 10:30 am at the FowlerLibrary.· Return club videos to Mike Cunningham.· Hand in your cane shafts for the Veterans’Cane Drive.· Dues for 2012 are due by the end of themonth.See you there,

Editors Note: Thank you Tye for all thehard work you put into the professionaldemos, from bringing all the great food forlunch and snacks during both Alan’s andJimmy’s demos (everyone happily filledtheir bellies), to providing thetransportation and housing of ourwoodturning guests. Our club owes you aBIG THANK YOU. Scott H.

Professional turners show their magicJimmy clewes amazesduring his third demo Jimmy Clewes made his thirdappearance to wow the audience at hisseminar on March 6th at Ideal SawWorks. Jimmy created four projects: a largeplatter, a cowboy hat and two boxesdesigned from far-off places. Jimmy’s sense of humor, stories fromhis trips around the world, and hislightning-speed turning kept everyone ontheir toes the entire day.

Alan lacer demonstratsHis wizardry with the skew

Alan Lacer made his first visit to our club onFeb. 9th at Ideal Saw Works and did notdisappoint. Alan showed us the many advantages oflearning to use the skew chisel and its ease of usewith practice. Alan made several projectsincluding boxes and end grain bowls. Alan then made the sparks fly, showing us howto make hook tools using his simple blacksmithingskills right on the lathe. Everyone had a great time and commented thatthey will be giving their skews another try.

The club’s Executive Board held ameeting on Saturday, January 28th after ourregular club meeting to discuss our club’spresent and future general business.

In attendance were the following boardmembers and guests: Tye Putman, CraigMiller, Ken Kenoyer, Stan Stevens, TomTucker, Rod Wiens , Jack Ritchie, TerryGilliand, Mike Cunningham, HowardAtamian, Scott Hampton, George Spencer, and Gordon Bone.

All current communications were readduring the club board meeting andapproved.

Stan Stevens gave the Treasures report.

There was a short discussion aboutprograms and demonstrations forupcoming meetings.

The Bakersfield and Bay Areawoodturning club’s have contracted withpro turner Graham Priddle to put ondemonstrations in early May. The boardvoted not to schedule a demonstration forour club because of the close proximity ofthe other two he is scheduled to give. Youcan attend one of the other clubs scheduleddemos’ if you contact one of other clubs to

reserve a seat. If enough members areinterested in going, maybe we can schedulea car pool.

The board voted to purchase professionallight stand equipment that will be used atour club’s various woodturningdemonstrations and events. This willrelieve member Scott Hampton from usingsome of his own personal equipment, as hehas been doing for the last several years. The cost is approximately $140.00.

Further discussion was had about our newwebsite manager Joe Smith. It was aunanimous decision to appoint Joe to thisjob. All agreed to help Joe all we could inthe transition.

The board agreed to pay for the materialsfor the Fowler Library display case GordonBone has volunteered to build.

Tye brought up that our club’s currentBy-Laws, that were enacted in 2010, werenever signed after being approved by themembership. This will be taken up at thenext board meeting.

Tye adjourned the meeting at 3:15.
