soon. A visiting golfing
architect told us that we
were probably the only
golf course in Gauteng
without any Poa Anna on
our greens!
On 1 November we held a
charity golf day to raise
funds for the family of
long time Dainfern Golf
employee Daniel Ngoma;
we raised R37 600 from
Thankfully the rainy sea-
son seems to be consider-
ing making an appear-
ance; we certainly need
the water. Fortunately
though, the mighty new
irrigation system has
been working its magic
and the course has re-
sponded marvelously
(where the system is ac-
tive). The greens too are
well on their way to re-
covery, although the 8th
is proving to be a particu-
lar challenging. You will
notice by stepping onto
the reopened practice
green just how good that
green is now, and we
hope that the rest of our
greens will be up to spec
the day.
The Dainfern Juniors Golf
Fun Day was held on 9
November and the turn-
out was incredible with
80-90 children arriving to
participate—just what
the future of golf needs.

Dear Dainfern Golfers
Sewer Pipeline Project Report The sewer line project is
back on track and we are
hoping that it will be fin-
ished by the end of Feb-
ruary 2015. The contrac-
tors will utilize the veld
grass area on hole 8 adja-
cent to the 11th tee box-
es for stock piling soil.
This will speed up opera-
tions and they will be able to hand over holes 7 and
8 to us for reha-
bilitation by mid-
December in-
stead of the end
of February 2015.

Course & Greens
Dainfern was fortunate
enough to receive a small
amount of rain over the
last 4 weeks. The total
rain fall for this period
was 25mm however
speaking to a lot of Green
keepers around Johan-
nesburg most of the oth-
er courses received be-
tween 60 – 80 mm during
the same period.
We have been focusing
on the greens over the
last three weeks as they
got hurt badly due to the
water issues. I'm happy to
report that steady pro-
gress has been made and
some greens have im-
proved vastly while oth-
ers are on the mend. The
only green that is still of
concern at the moment is
hole 8 but I'm confident
that even this one will
show a vast improvement
over the next two to
three weeks.
We hollow tined at the
end of the fairway at hole
8 as this area was com-
pacted. I have seen a vast
improvement over the
last week and will there-
fore repeat the process in
two weeks time in order
to have better ground
conditions.
ly on the slow side but at
the moment I'm focusing
more on getting the
greens healthy and back
to full coverage before I
will speed them up and
then reduce the amount
of fertilizer applied.
There were small signs of
dollar spot occurring a
week ago but we man-
aged to pick it up early.
We did a preventative
spray which worked and
there has been no mani-

and green surrounds
have been fertilized from
Hole 1 to 12 and the
members should see it
greening up fairly quickly
over the next two weeks.
I have spent extensive
time on the greens to get
them growing again. We
applied a high Nitrogen
based fertilizer, which will
cause them to play slight-
festation of the disease
since.
I would like to thank the
members and Committee

the evenings, the back 9
has been completed up
to hole 13.
Within the next two
weeks, we will start pay-
ing attention to the irriga-
tion trenches which were
provisionally filled. We
waited for them to settle
after the rain and irriga-
tion and now we believe
it is the right time to do
the final levels. We will
be filling them with a
divot mix and some areas
will be sprigged with Ki-
kuyu.
At the moment we are
also focusing on weeding
a few areas on the golf
course. This is the norm
as the weeds generally
appear after the first
rains.
Irrigation
The project will be com-
pleted by the end of No-
vember. One of the rea-
sons it has taken longer
than originally anticipat-
ed is due to the fact that
all of the wiring needed
to be replaced because it
was 25 years old. The
front 9 is completely au-
tomated and is running in

Obituaries
Mr George Koninis, past
Chairman of Dainfern
Golf Club and former
Trustee passed way re-
cently.
Mrs Yvonne Stewart, wife
of Paul Stewart who is a
member of Dainfern Golf
Club, also passed away
recently.
We wish strength and
comfort to both families
and friends of Yvonne and
George over this sad
time.
Vandalism on the Course
Unfortunately there are
still vandals on the estate
who intentionally cause
damage to the golf course
that we are spending so
much time, effort and
money on to make it
better.
Recently after it had just
rained, someone in a golf
cart was driving in circles
on the area next to the
13th green spinning the
cart’s wheels and tearing
up the turf.
In another incident, a
bollard that was set into
20cm of concrete was
forcible removed from
the ground, presumable
by kicking or repeatedly
driving into it.
Vandalism will not be
tolerated and the Club
will prosecute offenders.
A R5000 reward is being
offered to anyone who
can provide information
that leads to prosecution.
