FAQ
Lava
Volcanoes can be dormant,
extinct, or active.
We are here to look at active
volcanoes.
How are we supposed to
look in a volcano from
here?
Lucky for you it’s
almost MY birthday !Which calls
for…Cake knife!
CENSOREDNO VOLCANOES WERE HURT DURING THE MAKING OF THIS PRESENTATION…
That’s better. We did not get frosting stuck on the screen
right?
GOOD!Down there is magma.
BUT it will no longer be called magma after…
Good to go!STOP!
When the magma is out of the volcano
it is called lava.
There are different
types of lava.
We’re here to look at
Pahoehoe lava.
It’s pronounced pa-hoy-hoy.
Pahoehoe is runny lavaLike this:Ooo!Let’s look
underground…
Here are the parts of a volcano
eruption…
Here’s the Mantle.
Mantle
This is where the magma chamber is.
Magma chamber
Earth’s crust
This part is the Earth’s
crust.
Red-hot magma
This is where the red hot magma gets
out.How does the
magma get out?
This question can be
answered with the
IMAGINATION!
Let’s say this balloon is the Earth’s crust.
Inside the Earth’s crust is
the magma chamber as
shown before.
And let’s say something
happened to the earth’s
crust…
Something AMAZING!Something like…THIS!
EVERYTHING GOES…BOOM!
In other words if there is a crack in the earth’s crust the magma
escapes.
You can go back to the
explanation page now.
I’m sure you’ve seen
lava in lot’s of video games…
Well I guess I wouldn’t have
to tell you that lava is
REDHOT,LIKE CHILI
SAUCE!
Although there are
types of lava.
Like Pahoehoe,
It’s pronounced Pa-hoy-hoy.
Aa,It’s
pronouncedAh-ah.
Pillow lava,Pronounced
wellPillow lava
You can make CRYSTALS and GEMS out of minerals in
lava too!
Normally I would tell you
about each type of lava
from beginning to end…
But I can see the girls are
all wondering about the diamonds.
So I’ll tell about crystals
and gems first.
So let’s zoom in.
Closer…
Can you see me?OK!CRYSTAL and
GEMS
When molten lava cools, the minerals inside
slowly turn into…
CRYSTALS!Some can be
rare and precious…
These can be cut and
polished into gems.
You can find other things
like…
Agate:Formed in a
bubble inside magma
Zeolite:A glassy crystal
of oxygen, silicon and
various types of metals.
Olivine:Shiny stone
containing iron & magnesium
This is what cut olivine looks
like:
A simple uncut diamond in
volcanic rock from the mantle.
It looks boring when uncut but
when cut…
IT MAKES GREAT
DECORATION!To see the next type of lava we
have to go underwater
You might have
already know about
those.
Earth’s Crust
Mantle
Red-hot Magma

If you don’t you could always go
back to the explanation
page.
And click on simple
eruption.Anyway…
We’re here to see
Pillow Lava
Somewhere close to the volcano is
more mantle
Some bubbles of
magma float up and
erupt through
the ocean’s crust!See what
happened?
When magma wells up
under the sea,
It cools and forms into
large bubbles of
lava
It’s called pillow lava
because they look like stone pillows!
Back to land!Now let’s
talk about Aa lava.
Jagged and crumbly, Aa
lava is formed
when the molten rock cools down on contact
with air.
Although Pahoehoe is very runny
When it cools it
looks like wrinkled
skin.
Or coils of rope!
You can go back to the explanation page now.
Ever wondered how Olympus
Mons became the largest volcano
ever seen by humans?
Well…
Let’s spot Mars to see
what Olympus
Mons looked like years
ago…
CloserNASA
Can you see me?Good!
It’s time to see some volcanic
action!When the
lava cools…It hardens.New layers are formed…
Olympus Mons is now extinct.
It means well, dead. In other words it will never erupt
again.
This is not the same with dormant.
Dormant means it will erupt again after a
while.
Although Olympus Mons is dead now…
Well let’s just say LIFE’S HUGE
WHILE IT LASTED!
It is now 3 times larger than mount
Everest.
Sometimes it takes to about a
year for a volcano to grow
from small to big
You can go back to the
explanation page now.
Clouds of ash and dust from volcanoes are
dangerous.
Here’s a preview…
Let’s stand in a volcano!
Can you see me?
Volcanologists use protective suits like this so they can
study volcanoes.
When volcanoes
erupt ashes and dust come
out!
In a beautiful moment like this, all I can
say is…
THAT WAS NOT ME!!!Anyway…
These clouds can
sometimes stay in the sky for so long it looks black!
In fact when Mount Pinatubo
erupted in 1991, it threw out HUGE
amounts of
Ash, dust and dangerous gases
down the volcano!
Dust and ash turned the sky
black. When the dust fell on land, everything fell on the trees, houses and other things everything goes…
BLACK!It causes stuff like starvation, darkness and
GREYHEADEDNESS.
You can go back to the explanation
page now.

This presentation would not be possible without the inspiration of real life volcanoes…
No volcanoes were harmed in the making of this presentation…
WAIT!Just wanted to say…
Good night folks!
