Welcome toHarrogate & The Yorkshire Dales
Many visitors are attracted bythe atmosphere of Harrogatewith its grand architectureand cosmopolitan flavour. Itis no surprise that Harrogate, with its broad, tree linedstreets, beautiful parks andgardens and the 200 acres oftown centre grassland knownas the Stray, is famous for itsfloral displays as well asbeing a historical spa town.Whether you are staying onbusiness or for leisure, we aresure you will enjoy the com-bination of excellent shop-ping and ambience of thislovely town.
The Yorkshire Dales are reallyunique. A region of contrastsand beauty, the Dales em-brace a diverse collection ofwildlife habitats, a rich cul-tural heritage and is a placeblessed with a rare sense oftranquillity. As a result, in1954 over 680 square mileswas designated a nationalpark in recognition of theneed to treasure and preservethese qualities.
Situated astride the Penninesin the North of England, theDales span North Yorkshireand the southern fringes ofCumbria. There are over 20

main Dales, each noticeably differ-ent in character and aura from thenext. On the one hand, there’s thewild moorland and steeping u-shaped valleys of the northernDales, such as Arkengathdale andSwaledale. Here you can let yourmind get lost in the remoteness ofthe surroundings. On the other, there are the gentler, broader, southern valleys of Airedale andlower Wharfedale that roll into theurban areas of West Yorkshire.
For over 10,000 years, people havelived on this incredible land andtheir legacy has been left in theform of ancient settlement sites, disused mineral workings and the
patchwork of dry-stone walls andbarns, typical of the Dales. Earlyfarmers cleared the woodland anddeveloped the fields that blanketthe landscape today.
Today, around 20,000 people livewithin the Yorkshire Dales Na-tional Park, many of whom earntheir living from farming andtourism. Taking care of the sheepon the fells, tending to the hay andwild flower meadows in the valleybottoms whilst surrounded byclean, sparkling rivers that windtheir way down through the val-leys has long been a way of life forthe Dale’s farmers. The result is astunning landscape cherished by
residents and visitors alike.
Here amidst this wonderfulscenery, you will discover attrac-tions, castles and stately homesthat tell the story of this wonderfulland. Pretty stone built markettowns and villages are full of inter-esting shops and pubs, while themany cafés and tea-rooms servedelicious local fare that you canenjoy after an exhilarating walk orday out.
Enjoy Harrogate. Enjoy theYorkshire Dales.

Welcome toThe North York Moors, East Coast & The Wolds
Designated a NationalPark in 1952, The NorthYork Moors are charac-terised by their incrediblebeauty and a calmingsense of space, solitudeand tranquility.
Whatever the season, theMoors offer the perfect place toget away from it all and experi-ence spectacular countryside.Ridge upon ridge of purpleheather moorlands extend intothe distance, while the naturalbeauty of secluded dales andrugged heritage coastlinesmake it the ideal place to ex-plore. Wildlife enthusiasts canhear the call of upland birds inthe moorland peace and withover 2,300km of paths andtracks, including the ClevelandWay and Coast to Coast Na-
tional Trails, the North YorkMoors are a walker’s and cy-clist’s paradise.
The picturesque fishing port ofWhitby has little changed sincethe days of its famous son,Captain Cook. With its sheercliffs and ominous gothic ar-chitecture, Whitby proved to bethe perfect inspiration forBram Stoker’s famous dramaticnovel Dracula.
For a bustling and buzzing sea-side atmosphere, try Scarbor-ough. Packed with seasideattractions, the coastal towncaters for the whole family.
The East Yorkshire coastlineranges from the golden splen-dour of some of Britain’s finestbeaches, to the wave poundedrocks of the East Coast’s high-est cliffs at Flamborough Head.
Creating the perfect scenicbackground to accompany thebeautiful coastline are therolling hills of The YorkshireWolds, the local quaint countrytowns, where you can enjoythe Georgian charm of Beverleyand Howden, and many a his-toric house.
On the Humber Estuary youcan visit maritime Hull - with along deep-sea fishing traditionand now a leading port andgateway to Europe - whilst fur-ther inland you can find theport of Goole, or experience thenatural beauty of Spurn Pointstretching three and half milesinto the Humber Estuary fromthe Holderness Coast.
