Virtual world benefits through real world

solutions

Talk to the people who are already doing it - see what is really going on

They have a job to do which may conflict with your aims and objectives.

You need to talk about: Hardware including graphic cards Access Security issues And be prepared to educate them

Find some collaborators/co-operators who will work with you on this project. It’s hard work doing it all on your own.

Work together to see what you could do as a first step into virtual worlds.

See if you have enough internal resources or whether you need to bring in help from outside.

Make sure that your project is a good choice for developing into a virtual space – don’t fall into the trap of being in Second Life just for the sake of it.

Find a project from your curriculum that can be clearly linked back to learning outcomes – it will help you get support from sceptics if they can see clear links and benefits.

You can’t throw people into a virtual world and just hope that they will ‘get it’ because they are young, members of the Google Generation or possibly even digital natives.

You need to induct them into this system as you would any other.

It may well not turn out perfectly the first time...
