About “usability”

Usability testing

A definition

• “The extent to which a product can be used by specified users to achieve specified goals with effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction in a specified context of use.” (ISO definition)

@gerrygaffney

!

Usability “heuristics”• There are certain characteristics of usable

systems • Individually and of themselves, they don’t make

a system usable • But if they’re absent, the system will not be

usable.

How many participants?

Reporting

@gerrygaffney

Encourage observers

Invite people to observe Debrief with others Spread the word Avoid usability-testing-as-weapon.

@gerrygaffney

Good facilitation

Listen Allow plenty of time for people to think Don’t prompt Use neutral body language Encourage people to think aloud Finish on time!

@gerrygaffney

Moderated, unmoderated, remote, multi-party, automated, A/B testing, 5-second tests, RITE…

@gerrygaffney

Contextual enquiry, surveys, diary studies (“cultural probes”), card-sorting, heuristic evaluation, web analytics… lots of different user-centred design techniques

Just do it!
