Analysis and Comparison of MRI-Compatible Actuators For Use in Minimally Invasive MRI

Procedures

OurgoalistoimproveonthehydrostaticactuatorandtakeadvantageoftheMRI’simagingcapabilitiesinrealtimebyreplacingtheoversizedsyringesystemwitharollingdiaphragmcylindersystem.

CurrentMRIproceduresareverytimeconsumingduetoinaccuraciesfromthephysicianhavingtorelyonastillimagetomapoutthetargetedarea.Theseerrorscanresultinmisdiagnoses.ThecurrentsolutionistocreateamachinethatdoesnotcontainferrousmetalsandworksintheMRImachinetotakeadvantageoftheMRIimagingsysteminrealtime.Thisstudyattemptstoeliminatetheseinaccuraciesbyimprovingonthehydrostaticactuator.Thefirstprototypeusedplasticsyringesformovement.Althoughtheseplasticsyringeswererobust,theywerenotsmooth.Thecurrentprototypeusesglasssyringesandwhilethesearesmooth,theyarefragileandaretoolargetobeconsideredviable.Thedevicecanbeimprovedbyusingaactuatorthatisrobust,compact,andoperateswithlowfriction.

BIOPSYPROCESSForabiopsy,andiseasedtissuesampleisremovedfromapatient.ThetissueisfoundbyusinganMRImachine.Astillphotoofthetissueistakenandthephysicianusesthistodeterminewheretoinserttheneedleandtakesasampleofthetissue.Estimatingwheretoplacetheneedlecreatesanareaforerror.

Theexperimenthasshownthattherollingdiaphragmcylindersareassmoothastheglasssyringes.Alsothefabricreinforcedrubberrollingdiaphragmcylindersystemismuchmorestiffthantheglasssyringesystem.Withmorestiffness,thereshouldbeanincreaseinhapticfeedbackfromthesystem.Thisgivesthephysiciananothersenseotherthanvisualfeedbackwhiletakingthebiopsy.Furthermoretherollingdiaphragmcylindersaremorerobustandcompactthantheglasssyringe.
