Vector Feeding System- Robotic Feeding

Measures and Mixes Feed ~1000 lb load

Drives to barn and feeds cows, checks amount of feed left and calculates amount to distribute

Computer analyzes amounts and adjusts loads and pens to feed based on feed left

Can feed a ration with as little as 1% mixing error- traditional feeding systems can have errors of 3-10%

Ultrasound- portable, small units designed for barn and cow use

Cow collars, leg bands, and tagsMonitor activity (pedometer) andrumination (gut movements)

Illness detection and heat detection

• Temperature changes can indicate impending illness or calving.

• pH change can indicate issues with feed.

8

Boluses that monitor activity, temperature, and also pH (more expensive)

Technology allows for specialized care, no matter how many cows per herd

Robotic Milking- Cows milk when they want- 2-6x/dayCows get grain fed to them- Adjust feed amounts based on milk volume

Automatic Calf Feeders: Group feedingManage and monitor milk intake

18

Tractor technologyAuto Steer, planting guides

• Tracks loads, ingredient weights, feeding times and amounts, feeder accountability

• Manage ingredient inventories, costs, milk production and components

19

Feeding Technology- Digital scalesEZ feed- programs to analyze feeding

20

Sexed Semen, IVF and Embryo Flushes

• verify or correct parentage

• determine breed composition

• genotype polled individuals▪ Is cow PP or Ph?

• identify red carriers

21

Genomic testing/profiling can:

• identify carriers of known disease alleles, e.g.,

• identify homozygous lethal haplotypes and other chromosomal regions of interest (more on the research side)

• help reduce inbreeding

• enable genomic-based selection
