VCE

Product Design and Technology

•This subject is about designing a product to meet the needs of a client.

•Design is the process of seeing something through, from the initial recognition of a problem, to creating something new to solve that problem.

•For each of the following Units 1-4, students are required to find a client, usually a family member and design a product to meet their needs.

• All of the Units require a design folio to be completed.

•The design folio shows the development from the initial problem to the finished product, covering areas such as research of similar products and processes, sketching, design options, risk assessment, working drawings and evaluating the end product.

•For Unit 1, students are required to find an existing product that they want to make and redesign it, making at least 3 changes to it.

•For Unit one, students will only have about 5-6 weeks for practical work.

•Assessment

•Design folio/class work – 50%

•Practical work and Evaluation – 50%

•Students also complete the majority of a design folio outlining their design process and research, but this is finished in Unit 4.

Areas Covered

•Students look at how to analyse a product.

•Students complete the practical component throughout this unit and generally have at least 10 weeks on this.

Assessment

•Students complete practical work and take photos and evaluate their work. This gets put into their design folio.

•Students complete one SAC (report) analysing 3 different products.

Career Possibilities This subject can lead students into the following

areas:

- Building and Construction apprenticeship

- Cabinet Making apprenticeship

- Design at university.

- Engineering (We have had previous students say that because they did Product Design & Technology in VCE, this put them ahead of other students who hadn’t completed it, because they knew what needed to go into a design folio at university level.

Resources The text book that we use is Nelson Product Design &

Technology VCE Units 1-4 Text book and Nelson Product Design & Technology VCE Units 1-4 Workbook.

These texts cover all of the units 1-4.
