Every 5th adult has used a vaping product with over a quarter vaping daily. Close to half of vapers smoked before trying a vaping product, whereas over half seevaping as a way to give up smoking. The rechargeable e-cigarette with a replaceable cartridge or pod remains the most popular type of vaping product used. Themajority continue to buy vaping products monthly or more frequently, generally spending more per month with the average spend per person going up from€11 to €13. Specialist vaping shops remain the most popular purchase places but online shopping venues both within EU and Ireland show an increase inpopularity. Nearly half explain their choice of a vendor with Accessibility and Cost. In Oct’18, nearly 6 in 10 purchase nicotine of strength 0-6mg with tobaccoremaining the most popular flavour. Most or over half rely on discussion with friends/ colleagues who vape for info on vaping products, whereas almost 4 in 10refer to their local vape store. Over 7 in 10 think info on vaping should be made available on the HSE’s Quit.ie website.

KEYPOINTS
Every 5th adult (20%) has used a vaping product. In Oct’18, 27% of vapers use vaping products daily - ↑3% increase compared toNov’17 (24%). The largest proportion or those who have used them 2 or 3 times in the past has remained unchanged (42%). 44% ofvapers smoked before trying a vaping product, whereas more than half (53%) see vaping as a way to give up smoking. Therechargeable e-cigarette with a replaceable cartridge or pod remains the most popular type of vaping product used (46% or ↑2%).
This year 51% buy vaping products monthly or more frequently (↑2%), whereas 20% - weekly or daily (↓1%). Vapers seem tospend more in general with 42% spending less than €5 on vaping products per month compared to 46% in Nov’17 (↓4%) - theaverage spend per person going up from €11 to €13. Specialist vaping shops remain the most popular purchase places (31% orsame) but online shopping venues both within EU (14% or ↑4%) and Ireland (23% or ↑8%) show an increase in popularity. Nearlyhalf of vapers will explain their choice of a vendor with Accessibility (48%) and Cost (46%). In Oct’18, most or 57% purchasenicotine of strength 0-6mg (↑1%) with tobacco remaining the most popular flavour (40% or ↑1%).
In Oct’18, 44% of those who have ever used a vaping product currently smoke (↑2% compared to Nov’17) and 51% have smoked inthe past (↑1%). Gap between genders is significant as ↑15% more women seem to currently smoke (52%) compared to only 37%of men. 83% did or currently smoke on a daily basis (a slight drop of ↓1% on last year).

In Oct’18, 27% of adults use vaping products daily which marks a ↑3% increase compared to Nov’17 (24%). The largest proportion or those who have used them 2 or 3 times in the past has remained unchanged (42%). The number of male vapers remains steady, whereas that of females is up, bridging slightly the gap between genders.

• The gap between genders in regards to daily vaping usage has narrowed: 28% of males vape daily compared to 24% of females (Nov’17 ratio stands at 28% to 20%, resp.).

More than half of all vapers (53%) use a vaping product as a way to give up smoking. The next most popular reason for usage is due to the perception that vaping products are less harmful than cigarettes (36%).

A very small proportion of vapers used smoking cessation tools with the majority relying on willpower (85%) to quit smoking and failing, whereas over half (54%) use nicotine patches/ sprays.

In Oct’18, the majority or 44% tried smoking before trying a vaping product – a substantial decrease of ↓31% compared to Nov’17. More adults than last year both “vape & smoke cigarettes” (21%) and “only vape & no longer smoke cigarettes” (26%).

This year 51% of respondents buy vaping products monthly or more frequently (↑2% up since Nov’17) with 20% buying them weekly or daily (↓1% down). At 25%, those aged 35-54 stand out as the most frequent buyers of vaping products, i.e. daily or weekly, compared to the other two age groups.

In Oct’18, vapers spend more in general with 42% spending less than €5 on vaping products per month compared to 46% in Nov’17 (↓4%). 29% spend €5 - €15 per month (down slightly by ↓1%). The average spend per person has increased from €11 last year to €13 in 2018.

At 40% tobacco remains the most popular flavour bought by respondents (↑1% up on Nov’17) - it is much more popular with females (47%) than males (35%). Menthol comes 2nd, marking a ↑5% increase to 31%. This year the plain flavour enjoys the biggest jump in popularity – from 2% to 9%.
