Personal “a”• Whenever a person is the object of a verb in

Spanish, the personal a must be used after the verb and before the person that is the object.

• Eg. Conoces a la profesora. Veo a mis abuelos. Veo las maletas.

– In general, the verb tener does not take the personal a.

Direct Object

• What a direct object?• Direct object receive the action of the verb.• (answers the question who or what?)

• Eg. I have the passport.• I have who or what? The passport.

Find the direct object.• He has a boarding pass.

• I see Paul at the airport.

• We buy a ticket.

• They visit their grandparents.

• You all sell souvenirs.

Direct object pronouns

• Direct object pronouns take the place of direct object nouns.

• I have the passport.• I have it.

Direct object pronouns

• What are the Spanish direct object pronouns?

• me (me) nos (us)• te (you) os (you)• lo, la (him,her,it,you f.) los,las (you,

them)

• Direct object pronouns are placed directly before conjugated verbs.

Direct object pronouns

Examples:

• Yo veo a la profesora. • Yo la veo.

• Yo tengo el itinerario.• Yo lo tengo.

Direct object pronouns• When an infinitive follows the conjugated verb,

the direct object pronoun can be placed before the conjugated verb or attached to the infinitive.

No voy a hacer la maleta hoy.

• No la voy a hacer hoy.OR

• No voy a hacerla hoy.

Change the sentence with the correct direct object pronoun.

• Yo tengo unos boletos.

• Ella ve a los pasajeros.

• Nosotros compramos unas maletas.

• Mi hermano visita a mi hermana en la ciudad.

• Ustedes venden libros rojos.

• Usted tiene que comprar el paraguas.

Indirect object

• What is an indirect object?• Indirect objects tell who or for whom the

action is done. • (answers the question to whom or for whom?)

I give Rosa a ticket.• I give what? The ticket (D.O)• To whom? Rosa (I.O)

Find the Indirect object

• I bought him the book.

• He gives them a house.

• We sold Paul a car.

• You all gave me the ticket.

Indirect object pronouns

• What are the indirect object pronouns?

• me (to me) nos(to us)• te (to you) os (to you)• le (to him,to her, to you) les(to them,to you)

Indirect Object Pronouns

• You must use the indirect object pronoun to accompany the noun it modifies or to replace the noun.

Accompanies the noun:• Mamá les da el dinero a José y Ana.• Mom give Jose and Ana the money.

Replaces the noun:• Mamá les da el dinero.• Mom gives them the money.

• Some verbs because of their meaning are usually used with I.O.P.

• servir mandar• traer decir• pedir preguntar• dar vender

• Yo te vendo un libro (a ti).• Nosotros les pedimos la pizza a ellos.• Ustedes nos dan el pasaporte (a nosotros).

Indirect object pronouns

• When an infinitive follows the conjugated verb, the indirect object pronoun can be placed before the conjugated verb or attached to the infinitive.

• Example:Le voy a vender mi coche a Sara.

• Le voy a vender mi coche. OR• Voy a venderle mi coche.

Translate1. She serves me (the) dessert.

2. I bring you the drinks.

3. You ask her for the ticket.

4. They send us the itinerary.

5. I give them the passport.

6. You tell Mary the truth.
