Vacation. /veɪ’keɪ·ʃən/A holiday, especially when you are travelling away from home for pleasure. A period of the year when schools or colleges are closed, or when law courts do not operate.

Beach. /bitʃ/An area of sand or small stones near the

sea or another area of water such as a lake.

Sand. /sænd/A substance that consists of very small grains

of rock, found on beaches and in deserts.

The sea. /si/ A large area of salt water that is partly or

completely surrounded by land, or the salt water that covers most of the surface of the earth.

The pool. /pul/ A small area of usually still water, or a small

amount of liquid. A pool is also a swimming pool.

Summer. /’sʌm·ər/The season of the year between spring and fall, lasting from June to September north of the equator and from December

to March south of the equator, when the weather is warmest.

Sky.   /skɑɪ/The area above the earth in which clouds,

the sun, and the stars can be seen.

Rain. /reɪn/Drops of water that fall from clouds.

The swimsuit. /’swɪm’sut/A piece of clothing for swimming; a

bathing suit.

The sunglasses. /’sʌn’glæs·əs/

Dark glasses you wear to protect your eyes from the light of the sun.

The mountain. /ˈmɑʊn·tən/ A raised part of the earth’s surface, larger

than a hill.

The winter. /’wɪn·tər/  The season when the weather is coldest between fall

and spring, lasting from November to March north of the equator and from May to September south of the

equator.

The snow. /snoʊ/ Water that falls from clouds as soft, white

flakes (= thin pieces) of ice when it is cold.

Hotel /hoʊ’tel/A building where you pay to have a room

to sleep in.

Elevator. /’el·ə’veɪ·tə̬r/ A piece of equipment, usually in the form of a

small room, that carries people or goods straight up and down in tall buildings.

Museum. /mjʊ’zi·əm/A building where people can go to view works of

art or objects of interest to science or history.

Camping. /’kæm·pɪŋ/ The act of staying and sleeping in an outside area for one or more days and nights, usually

in a tent.
