Who was Balboa?• He lived from 1475 – January 15, 1519• He was a Spanish conquistador/governor.• He traveled the world in the 1500’s• He is best known for having crossed the

Isthmus of Panama to the Pacific Ocean • Balboa suggested that the settlement of San

Sebastian be moved to the region of Darién

Where was he from?• Balboa was born in Jerez de los

Caballeros in Badajoz, Spain.• He was a descendant of the lords of

the castle of Balboa, in Badajoz.

• His mother was the Lady de Badajoz• His father was the hidalgo,

Nuño Arias de Balboa.• He was a Spaniard.

What contribution did they make to history?• He crossed the Isthmus of Panama to the Pacific

Ocean • He did this in 1513 • And became the first European to lead an

expedition to have seen and/or reached the Pacific from the New World.

• He founded the settlement of Santa Maria la Antigua del Darién

• in present-day Colombia in 1510, • This was the first permanent

European settlement on the mainland of the Americas

• He made around 63 voyages

Exploration

• He sailed 63 voyages• He crossed the Isthmus of Panama to

the Pacific Ocean• In 1500, Balboa sailed with Rodrigo

de Bastidas • They sailed from Spain to Colombia• He was the FIRST to use the Panama

canal

• He sailed with Rodrigo de Bastidas • He had a large effect on panama• He is still on their stamps, money,

and a huge public figure

• Plans were made for Cortés to sail to the Americas• He would sail with with a family acquaintance and

distant relative, Nicolas de Ovando y Cáceres.• But an injury he sustained, prevented him from

making the journey• He was injured while hurriedly escaping from the

bedroom of a married woman from Medellin
