PrologueForeword to the UVa in Figures

in Figures
The University of Valladolid is constantly striving to further its commitment to society. In an effort to achieve this, the University once again wishes to provide an account of all of the activities, areas and features of university life which may be reflected in figures through the annual publication of “The UVa in Figures”.
We believe that by providing access to this information and by adopting greater transparency in university management, we are not only enhancing a more democratic approach in our society, but also helping to bring society closer to our university.
Accountability in the independence which society has conferred on us entails availing ourselves of the data and indicators which can guide us in our planning, our decision making and our permanent wish to improve. “The Uva in Figures” is yet another means by which quality at the University of Valladolid may be ensured.
Each member of the university community (students, academic staff, personnel and administrative staff) will be able to find in “The UVa in Figures” a host of references to all kinds of information to guide and help them improve in their everyday work.
It is our hope that “The Uva in Figures” will help the society which we serve, as well as the university community itself, to gain a deeper insight into the standards achieved at our university and those areas which can yet be improved but which we will no doubt, thanks to all our efforts, be able to make our future strengths.

Observations:1.- Percentile 20: statistical
measurement that leaves 20 per cent of the new students below that value and 80 per cent above it. This is the value that they have obtained in the entrance examination.
2.- In this table are included the new students who have been admitted to a degree with a University Entrance Examination Mark of 7 or above.
3.- Students enrolled on second cycle only degree courses are not included as admission procedure is different to that of first year students. New students who cancel enrolment during the academic year are also not included.

Applications Rejected: number of students unable to register for their choice degree. In second cycle degree courses the distinction between choices in pre-registration is not pertinent and these data have been included in the "1st choice" category.Data corresponding to 15 march 2009

Observations:1. Students is considered to be the number of student records of registered students. Thus any student taking two degrees will have two records. 2. A new student is one who registers in the first year time on a degree course as well as those students from other degrees or universities who register in the first year. For only second cycle degree courses, new students are those who register form the first time in either of the two years. Thus, those students who pass from an old syllabus to a new one or who are on International Exchange Programmes are not considered as new students.3. Students only registered in "End of Degree Projects" are not included when this project is not considered as a subject within the corresponding curriculum. Students who cancelled their enrolment during the academic year have not been included either.Data corresponding to 15 march 2009

Real optional choices and practical classes required (2008/09)
2 .4.1Undergraduate training. Process of training
1609UVa
in Figures
Interpretation:1. Real optional choices:
reflects the offer of studies available. This indicator always takes values above 100, since the offer of optional subjects available in curricula will always be equal to or above the optional subjects the student is required to take, as the student can never take subjects that are not offered. Thus, the greater the percentage, the greater the offer of optional subjects available on the curriculum.
2.-Practical classes required: This indicator shows the importance of the offer of practical teaching in the curriculum. The closer it is to one, the greater is the specific weight of the number of practical credits offered to the student in the curriculum.
