President’s Message
Pretty overwhelming! Well, after a good sales pitch and some consideration, I
changed my mind. The reason: I decided that in good conscience it was time
to give back.
I have belonged to the Utah Watercolor Society without a lapse since Nancy
Maxfield Lund was president in 2003. That’s a long time. I served on the
board for a year when Sue Martin was president, a long time ago. And most
recently I was the education board member for 3 years.
But mostly it has been a free ride. It was easy to make the excuse that I did
not have time to help. But as I witnessed that the current president had WAY
more on her plate than I can even fathom, I determined I had no excuse! You
are stuck with me for a year. I will do my best, though my best isn’t usually
perfect.
UWS Paint Spot July/August 2018
I’m the latest in a long string of UWS
presidents, dating back to 1974.
Although it may sound impressive,
anyone in the society knows it’s not a
popularity contest. Nor does it have
anything to do with art skills.
The president and the board are
those who are willing to do the work
that it takes to keep this great
organization functioning. When
Jennifer Love asked me to accept the
V.P. position my immediate response
was an emphatic No Way! I knew that
it would mean that after the V.P. year
I would have to serve as president.
My desire is to at least maintain the
organization as best I can. Fortunately
for us all, my predecessors have each
made great contributions throughout
the years to establish a very impressive
organization.
If you have enjoyed the benefits of
membership I would suggest that you
consider this, “Is it time to give back in
some way?”

What a Girl Wants by Kristi Grussendorf
A closer look reveals subtlety in color, poetic impressions, and serene
beauty. “I am very conscious of my edges and never say ‘too much’. I think
it is important to leave some mystery, some room for imagination. When
you look at the finished piece, it is remarkable what you think you see that
is not really there! For me, that is one of the most beautiful things about
painting in watercolor!” Conveying atmosphere is Frank’s specialty. In fact,
it is the basis of all his work and teaching. Frank currently focuses on
watercolor and oils.

ENJOY IMAGES FROM TORREY!!
This was a spectacular year for our fifth annual Arts and the Park event as the invited artists to Capitol Reef
National Park. The weather was windy which blew the biting flies away and cooled temperatures. We had 19
participating artists and their guests May 29 through June 3 this year. Spike Ress was our guest artist.
Highlights included our artists’ welcome dinner on Wednesday evening at Susan Snow’s house. There were many
Doug Snow works displayed as Susan entertained us with her stories of life in the area and the art inspired by the
landscapes.
Because of the Dark Skies over Torrey project came to fruition this year, we were inspired to paint out after dark on
Thursday evening. An adventurous group of artists gathered at Sunset Point to catch a view of the sunset and then
later dark star field sky.
Friday night was gallery stroll which included the two galleries in Torrey, a co-op gallery called Gallery 24 and Torrey
Gallery. Our guest artist had a show at the Torrey Gallery and sales were brisk. Saturday is our culminating event
with the artwork produced over the previous 3 days put on display for the competitive portion of our event and the
auction. The competition is divided into small works and large works part. Jana Parkin won first place in the large
works competition while Chariya Ernst won first place in the small works competition. Both paintings sold, as well as
30 of the other 56 paintings displayed. Paintings and other winners will be put on the UWS website.
An import part of the weekend is an event where Salt Lake High School Students who are interested in becoming art
teachers come to teach children from Wayne County. UWS artists volunteered to assist these young artists at the
Ripple Rock Nature Center located near the visitors center in Capitol Reef on Saturday morning. Children work with
Donna Pence, the AP Art teacher at East HS to create paintings on panels which will be displayed at the Wayne
County Fair. The theme was the importance of water to the region.
If you’re interested in this event, we have the dates for 2019- May 28-June 2. Registration will open in April 2019.

JEANNIE MCGUIRE WORKSHOP - RECAP
An Intuitive Approach to Character Development of Faces and Figures
Spring 2018 Workshop
Jeannie McGuire
“Figurative Design - Character Is More
An intuitive approach to character development of faces and figures”
Five days with Jeannie McGuire inspired the students to ramp up creative juices. We learned to break rules and think
outside of the box, implementing some ideas that were unique or at least new to class members. However, Jeannie’s
goal for the workshop was for each artist to develop their own style, not to try to copy hers.
Jeannie only does figurative work, usually referring to photos of people she does not know. We were entertained by
her imagination. Even before beginning, she carefully examines small faces using her magnifying tool called a linen
tester. She often makes up a story about the character(s) in the photo. She imagines their life circumstances or what
was happening at the moment the photo was taken. But as she begins painting the figures, a whole story develops and
sometimes the story changes in the process.
Although Jeannie accurately draws from the photo, once it is drawn the photo is put away and not referred to again.
This keeps the art exciting and open to many possibilities. For instance, titanium white may be used as a wash over an
area. Clothing and colors are carefully considered and used as design elements for the purpose of composition. Her
smallest brushes are the size of those one would use to paint a house. The people are portrayed in somewhat of an
abstract manner. Backgrounds are even more abstract.
Rather than starting and completing paintings, Jeannie works on many paintings simultaneously. No work is done on
them until she is inspired to know what and where she needs an element. She determines this with the aid of her
hands, moving over the painting to cover areas. Sometimes paintings can be in process for years before being
completed.
Before the class was allowed to paint, the students were instructed to add water to the dried up paints in their palettes
and to stir them until the paint was the consistency of yogurt. Importance was given to using more pigment than water
to achieve rich and vibrant colors. Then the class was set free to experiment using our own photo references! It was a
fun and inspiring week. Thanks Jeannie!
The Utah Watercolor Society enjoyed a catered Café Rio dinner, raffle prizes and pot luck
goodies for our last meeting of our fiscal year. Thank you to everyone who shared treats.
We even went all out with table decorations of live plants that were given away at the
conclusion of our social. While we visited and ate, a slideshow was running of the current
Western Federation of Watercolor Societies show. Some artists brought their great plein air
paintings to display too. Maura Naughton gave us a glimpse into the very recent Arts and the
Park, through a slideshow. Signature members were announced and awarded.
Most importantly, this was the member’s opportunity to vote for our UWS 2018-2019
president. Julie Ickes was nominated and voted in unanimously. Her selection for vice
president was Linda Flannery, who was also nominated and received unanimous yea votes.
The meeting was then turned over to Julie, who announced the new board for next year,
who were also voted for and whose names are listed elsewhere in this newsletter.
Julie also presented Jennifer with the well-deserved traditional past president pendant.
Thank you for a wonderful year Jennifer Love. Your dedication, enthusiasm and technical
skills were (and are) so much appreciated and made for such a great year for the society
members!
Thanks to everyone who pitched in to help with set up and clean up after our event. We look
forward to another wonderful year and hope everyone has a great summer. But let’s
remember to put some miles on our brushes!

I was one of the twelve artists fortunate to

informative and charismatic Spanish guides,
quality accommodations and ample
stimulating plain air images. Kristi provided

I look forward to experiencing Provence, France in June,

bit of money but we had a full group sooner than expected
and there were people who ended up on the wait list.

Jeannie McGuire was our presenter. Jeannie’s demonstration showed
the crowd her fascinating process. She deliberately and carefully
considers each stroke and element she incorporates into the production
of her art. Her demonstration was of a wedding party, loosely based
upon a photographic reference.
Jeannie has been featured in many art magazines, taught workshops
around the world and has been featured in exhibitions globally as well.
We were privileged to witness Jeannie exhibit her unique style and the
thought provoking approach she takes in her creative process.

I was introduced to the magical world of watercolor about 14 years ago
through Jeannie Millecam. Wasn't I the luckiest girl ever to have such a
stellar teacher to show me the ropes?! I don't have an art background so I
have really enjoyed soaking up some wonderful education through
workshops offered through our UWS CVC organizations.
One of our goals this year will be to help our members come up with their
own artist statement. It will be exciting to consider our own individual
creative paths.
“No matter how great your teachers may be, and no matter how esteemed
your academy’s reputation, eventually you will have to do the work by
yourself. Eventually, the teachers won’t be there anymore. The walls of the
school will fall away, and you’ll be on your own. The hours that you will then
put into practice, study, auditions, and creation will be entirely up to you. The
sooner and more passionately you get married to this idea—that it is
ultimately entirely up to you—the better off you’ll be.” (Big Magic by
Elizabeth Gilbert.)
Beach Day
Greetings from Cache Valley!
I am sharing a little painting I did of
my grand daughter this past spring. I
think I was able to work so quick and
comfortably on this because I was
painting on the back of a failed
painting. Isn't it funny how uptight we
can be over a piece of paper? I want
to encourage all of us to find time
every week this summer to sketch,
paint, create and enjoy the beauty we
see all around us. It's only paper,
and as Elizabeth implied, in the end
our success will be entirely up to
us. Let's get some miles in on our
brushes :)

"Anyone who enters the Cache Valley Chapter Summer Exposition may
also bring up to five unframed pieces to put in an "art bin" that patrons may
browse through. These pieces are for purchase only . They will not be
judged. Anyone who choses to do this must have a list of the pieces and
their prices to leave at the gallery. Each piece should be in a transparent
envelope and be well marked with the artist's name and contact information.
Please contact Ellen Trickler if you have questions about this."
