USE OF: THERE IS – THERE ARE

Introduccion:The next presentation will show us the difference between using THERE IS – THERE ARE, we will learn different ways and situations to use it. We will be practicing a brief activity basing us on some grammar notes.

Objective:

Show students the different ways and situations in which we can use THERE IS – THERE ARE. By the end of the lesson students will be able to identify in which situation we are going to use either one or another.

GRAMMAR NOTES

There is - There are

** We use there is and there are to say that something exists.

Positive SentencesWe use THERE IS for singular and

THERE ARE for plural

Example: There is a library on the main street.

There are coffe stores on the center.

ContractionsThe contraction of there

is is there's.

Example: There's  a Train station next block. There's  a laundamet next to the

coffe store.

Negative FormThe negative is formed by

putting not after is or are:

Example:

There is not a horse in the field. There are not eight children in the

school.

There Are with ANYWhen we want to indicate that a

zero quantity of something exists we use there aren't any.

Example:There aren't any book stores here. There aren't any hotels here.

Questions To form a question we place is / are in front

of there. Again we use any with plural questions or those

which use uncountable nouns. We also use there is / are in short answers.

EXAMPLE:

Is there a supermarket? - No, there isn't. Are there any park? - Yes, there are.

How Many with Are There.

If we want to find out the number of objects that exist we use How many in the following form:

How many + plural noun + are there (+ complement).

EXAMPLE:How many clothing stores are in the main

street?How many schools are there?

TIME TO PRACTICE!

C. Describe your neighborhood. What is in your neighborhood? What doesn’t exist?
