Let me tell you a story…

about hidden, underground treasure.

In the summer of 1795,

a boy named Daniel McGinnis was exploring.

All of a sudden, he came across a curious circular depression in the ground.

Daniel came back to the site with two friends and started digging.

And thus the treasure hunt began.

But exhausted from their efforts, they left to obtain assistance and didn’t return for eight years.

In 1803, they finally returned with the Onslow Company.

They found a layer of oak logs at every 10 foot interval…

…and other interesting objects like a stone with mysterious writing.

“Forty Feet Below, Two Million Pounds are Buried.”

At 90 feet deep, water began to fill the pit and would not stop.

An artificial beach was made to ensure that the pit would be flooded.

It was a booby trap!

They began to drill, actually drilling into 2 chests guessed to be filled with coins…

The Truro Company

…but water flooded their attempts again.

…but caused the bottom of the Money Pit to drop further down.

In 1861 the Oak Island Association attempted…

In 1861 an island tragedy struck. A man was killed!

Then a cement vault was discovered…

…but more water flooded their attempts.

Bob Restall and his family set their eyes on the treasure.

But this resulted in more deaths!

In 1976 the Triton Alliance lowered a camera down into the pit…

…and claimed that they found a severed hand, 3 chests, and a human body.

In 1976 divers were sent down, but they found nothing.

Booby trap- hidden trap that is set to act when the object is touched, moved, etc.

Carbon monoxide- colorless, odorless toxic gas

Depression- a landform that is sunken or depressed below the surrounding area

Excavate- to make a hole or channel by digging

Flagstone- sedimentary rock in the form of a flat stone slab

Oak Island- 140 acre island in Lunenburg County on the south shore of Nova Scotia, Canada

Tackle block- a system of ropes and pulleys used to lift heavy objects
