Gymnastics
We have had a very exciting start to the summer, beginning with the 2003 U.S. Gymnastics Championships held in Milwaukee, Wis., June 19-22. The depth of the men's and women's program was evident by the tight battle for the number one slot. In the end, Paul Hamm earned his second consecutive National All-Around title and 2002 World Championships Uneven Bars Gold Medalist, Courtney Kupets, earned her first National All-Around title.
In addition to great competition from the men's and women's programs, the Rhythmic National Championships and Sports Acrobatics Team Trials also took place.
At the rhythmic venue Mary Sanders earned her second consecutive All-Around title and four event titles. Mary is looking forward to the Rhythmic World Championships, Sept. 24-28 in Budapest. From the looks of her performance in Milwaukee, she will represent the United States very well.
The World Team Trials for Sports Acrobatics showcased athletes competing for assignments to the 2003 Freedom Cup, an international competition hosted by USA Gymnastics to be held July 30-Aug. 3 in Jacksonville, Fla. The Team Trials served as the first of two competitions used to select the Sports Acrobatics National Team from among all elite athletes.

As we go to print on this issue of the magazine, the Trampoline and Tumbling National Championships will take place July 12-21 in Sacramento, Calif. Good luck to all of the athletes competing in this competition. Watch for coverage of this event in the Sept. / Oct. issue of USA Gymnastics, and on the website at www.usa-g1jmnastics.org.

Courtney, from Hill's Gymnastics in Maryland, came on strong in Milwaukee winning her first USA National All-Around title. This 16-yearold was in fourth place after preliminaries but pulled her way up to the top after the all-around finals to win the gold.
"Winning the National Championships is just amazing," said Kupets. "I fell on vault the first day but I knew it's not over until it's over. I just came into finals wanting to hit all four events and pull up in the standings."
Kupets, who is the 2002 World Champion on bars, was named Athlete of the Year while her coach, Kelli Hill, received the honor of Coach of the Year.
Just behind Kupets were Tasha Schwlkert and Hollie Vise who tied for second in the all-around. Schwikert, 18, is the defending National Champion but had been sidelined for much of 2003 due to injuries. She had the highest all-around score during the second day of competition. She said, "I have no disappointment in not winning. With what I've been through this year I'm just happy to have tied for second all-around." Schwikert trains at Gymcats in Las Vegas with her coach Cassie Rice.

JASON WHITFIELD MEMORIAL INVITATIONAL The Jason Whitfield Memorial Invitational was created by the Jason Whitfield Memorial Foundation as a way to support the scholarship endeavors of male gymnasts. This foundation honors the memory of National Team Member and Olympic hopeful Jason Whitfield whose devotion and enthusiasm for the sport of gymnastics continues to serve as an inspiration for many. The Whitfield foundation, which is run by Jim and Cathy Whitfield, has supported the men's program for the past 11 years by providing scholarships to deserving athletes. To date the Whitfield foundation has awarded an incredible $85,500 in scholarship awards. The names of all 35 recipients of the Jason Whitfield award were called at the Men's National Qualifier in Ann Arbor and 18 of the gymnasts were present. This gathering provided not only an opportunity for the Whitfield's to meet some of these gymnasts face to face, but also provided the athletes a chance to personally say thank you for the scholarship they had been given. This scholarship program is a homerun because of the work of Jim and Cathy and the entire Whitfield Family!

More than 100 of the nation's top men's gymnasts tumbled into Ann Arbor on May 17 for the Men's U.S. Championships Qualifier at Keen Arena on the campus of the University of Michigan. The Men's Qualifier allows athletes not already on the Senior National Team to qualify for the U.S. Championships, and eventually onto the U.S. National Team headed to the 2003 Pan American Games, Aug. 1-17 in Santo Domingo, and the 2003 World Championships, Aug. 16-24 in Anaheim, Calif. Congratulations to senior winner Jason Gatson, junior elite 16-18 winner Scott Garner, and junior elite 14-15 winner Ralph Rosso.
