Update on recent floods in Sagaing Region and Kachin StateHeavy seasonal rains from 14 to 19 July caused heavy flooding throughout theSagaing Region of Myanmar. The Government's Relief and ResettlementDepartment (RRD) reported on 23 July that some 70,000 people have beenaffected by the floods in 11 townships in the Sagaing Region, with ninefatalities and over 12,000 houses damaged. The RRD in Sagaing report thatover 40,000 people have been severely affected and/or displaced by thefloods. Many schools in the area are reported to be closed due to the floods.These figures have not yet been independently verified by the UN.

Local authorities, the Union Government, the military, as well as the MyanmarRed Cross Society (MRCS) and local civil society organizations are respondingwith rescue operations and are providing food, water and other basicnecessities to those affected. A joint team comprised of the UN, INGOs, MRCSand RRD is currently visiting the worst affected areas to assess the situationand humanitarian needs.

The UN has offered support and stands ready to assist response efforts inSagaing should the scale of the emergency exceed the Government’s capacityto respond.

As of 23 July, RRD reports that 827 households in Mogaung Township, KachinState, were displaced by the floods. The majority of those displaced arecurrently staying with host families, while 165 households are beingaccommodated in six locations. The Kachin State Government and RRD haveprovided food, drinking water, NFIs and cash assistance to flood affectedfamilies. On 22 July, an UN inter-agency mission also provided tarpaulins, oralrehydration salts, dignity kits, sleeping mats and jerry cans for initial response.On 23 July, RRD indicated that emergency needs had been met, but that somehumanitarian assistance may be required once the displaced return to theirhomes. On 24 July, an inter-agency assessment team visited flood affectedareas to further assess needs.
