Task 1 Art AppreciationYvonne Audette, Dream of an ancient tablet

In pairs:

Discuss the types of materials and implements the artist may have used to create the work.

Discuss possible meanings for the title of the work.

Identify the main symbols that Audette has used in her work.Consider the work as a system of signs or symbols that communicate meaning.

Select some of the symbols and brainstorm possible meanings for each symbol.

Create a verbal narrative based on an interpretation of the symbols. You will present this story to the class.

Task 2 Making paintings using symbols

Think of a dream you have had.

What was the colour and detail like?

How are dreams different to reality?

In your VAD: Recall a dream and draw some images from it.

Your ‘Unreal Art Narrative’

Create frottages by rubbing oil pastel on paper over textured surfaces in the playground to tell an ‘Unreal’ dream.

Use a skewer to scratch through the pastel, etching personal symbols onto the surfaces.

Layer washes of diluted acrylic paint over the surfaces. Collage and glue strips of text based upon your dream over the work.
