Building on the foundation of these cornerstone values, we have embarked on a process of identifying the focus areas considered most critical by the members of our community. From there, we will position our United Way to serve as a catalyst for bringing our community together to build a stronger Skagit County for all of us.
In the face of changing and ever more challenging times, United Way continued the evolutionary work begun to reshape the organization to fulfill the promise of our new mission statement: United Way of Skagit County focuses community investment to create positive, sustainable change in people's lives!
Through a rigorous planning process, our board of directors articulated the four core

Given to recognize Distinguished Service, The Ted Reep Award is named for one of our founders and is the highest tribute given by United Way. The 2011 recipient is Marie Erbstoeszer, a consultant in health care planning and administration. Marie has served on the board for twelve years and has chaired the Program (Allocations) Committee for five years. She invests her time and talent to review grant requests from partner agencies and then leads her committee through careful assessment to determine allocations. Marie is also a strong advocate for United Way in the community.
Marie is shown here receiving the award from the 2010 recipient, Dan Berentson.

Target of Burlington donated two decorated holiday trees to United Way of Skagit County as part of the Target Share-a-Tree Program. United Way distributed the trees and ornaments worth an estimated $60 each to a young mother at Northwest Youth Services, and to Community Action Agency’s Family Development Center.
Parents are a child’s first and most important teacher, and they know that children learn through play and exploration. These calendars provide easy-to-implement activities that fit into a family’s busy daily routine and also help get children ready for school. Boeing donated 1,200 of these creative tools; United Way distributed them to libraries and childcare centers.
Days of Caring: A long tradition with United Way has been matching teams of volunteers – often from donor businesses and agencies – to nonprofits needing helping hands with painting, landscaping, and other one-time hands-on help. In 2011, Days of Caring was expanded from a three-day effort to a three-month effort. There were 11 projects completed with over 3,000 hours of volunteer support.
Habitat for Humanity is helping to build houses for families who are investing their own ‘sweat equity’ and US Bank employees add their own sweat to the project.
Camp Kirby has been a Skagit tradition for hundreds of kids. The “older kids” from Skagit State Bank help out by cleaning & painting the facility.
Two popular projects involve hand labor – and lots of fun!

The workplace campaign is the backbone of United Way’s annual
fund drive. More than 60 businesses/agencies invite a Loaned Executive or Campaign Associate to speak to
employees and volunteers; these businesses agree to deduct employees contributions from regular paychecks.
Some of the businesses match their employee’s gifts and/or make a
Corporate Contribution. Payroll deduction is a tremendous way to
support the community….and it adds up. The Top 20 Workplace Campaigns
include businesses and individuals listed below and on the next page.
Together they represent almost 70% of the 2011 campaign – and we are
grateful to them all.
