want.Similar to majority rules.

Some Territories use Popular Sovereignty to decide if they wanted

slavery in their state.

Republicanism

The people exercise their power by electing their representatives.

Our Congress is based on a Republican form a Gov.

Federalism

A system of government in which power is shared between the national

government and the states.

Federalism allows the different governments to share or divide

powers.

Separation of PowersThe division of basic powers into

branches.

Separation of powers prevents any part of government from having too much

power.

Checks and Balances

The power each branch has over the other. Each branch depends on the

other to perform the work of government.

Checks and Balances prevents any government branch from acting

alone.

Limited Government

EVERYONE IS SUBJECT TO THE LAW! President, government officials, and citizens alike must follow the law.

Limited Government is like limiting the power of a King. We all just

follow the laws.

Individual rights

Personal liberties and privileges.

All American citizens have individual rights.

Compromise

This is an agreement between two or more sides of an argument in which

everyone gets some of the things they want, but not all.

The Great Compromise was an agreement between Virginia and New

Jersey concerning representation.

Bicameral

A Representative legislature that is divided into two groups.

Our bicameral Congress has a House of Representatives and the Senate.
