Chp. 10 Lesson 7 –Volume of a Prism

VOCABULARY

volume - the amount of space the solid occupies.

FINDING THE VOLUME OF A RECTANGULAR PRISMCount Cubes in a Stack to Find Volume

or

Use the Formula for the Volume of a Prism: V = lwh

where l = length w = width h = height

The volume is always cubed.

VOLUME OF A PRISM EXAMPLE

V = lwh

= (8)(6.2)(3.9)

= 193.44 in3

Estimate to check: 8 x 6 x 4 = 192

3.9 in

6.2 in8 in

FINDING A MISSING DIMENSION EXAMPLEA pool at an aquarium is a rectangular prism that is 30 meters wide and 12 meters deep. Its volume is 21,600 cubic meters. How long is the pool?

V = lwh

21,600 = l(30)(12)

21,600 = 360l

360 360

60 m = l

VOLUME GROUP PROBLEM

Find the volume of a rectangular prism that is 5 m by 2 m by 4 m.

V = lwh

V = (5)(2)(4)

V = 40 m3

VOLUME GROUP PROBLEM

The volume of a bathtub is 16 cubic feet. The bathtub is 4 feet long and 2 feet wide. How deep is the bathtub?

V = lwh

16 = (4)(2)(h)

16 = 8h

2 ft = h
