Unit 5 - Injury in sport

BTEC First. Unit introduction.

Session aims & objectives

Aim: - by the end of this session, Students will know the different learning outcomes and

assessment methods used in this topic.

Objectives: - by the end of this session, All students will identify the learning outcomes used in this

topic. Some students will describe the learning outcomes used in

this topic. Few students will explain the useful definitions used in this

topic.

What we expect.

Attendance – all the information given is needed for the completion of assignments.

Mobiles – off during all sessions

Correct Equipment – Pens, paper and practical kit.

Respect

Appearance – correct kit.

Unit aim

The aim of this unit is to develop learner knowledge of common sports injuries and illnesses and their respective treatment. It will also consider risk assessment and its management.

Learning outcomes.

1. Know the different types of injuries and illness associated with sports participation.

2. Be able to deal with injuries and illnesses associated with sports participation.

3. Know the risks and hazards associated with sports participation.

4. Be able to undertake risk assessments relevant to sport.

Basic words.

Discuss the following words with a partner.

Agree on a definition for each and write them down.

Health / Safety / Injury / Hazard / Risk

Useful Definitions

Health:

Being free from illness, injury or disease and having a general sense of well being.

Useful Definitions

Safety:

Being free from anything that could cause harm.

Injury:

Anything that occurs or happens to an individual that causes bodily harm.

Useful Definitions

Risk: The chance of injury

occurring because of a hazard, the risk could be great or small.

Hazard:

Anything that can cause bodily harm, e.g. a slippery floor, or sports equipment like a javelin

In groups you will be given a useful definition word and you need to use the information from today to describe how it can have an affect on sports participation.
