FRIDAY’S WARM-UP

The Senior class has 21 girls and 29 boys. What percent of the class are boys? What percent of the class are

girls?

Unit 5 Vocab WordsAssociative Property of Addition – The sum of a set of numbers is the same no matter how the numbers are grouped. (a + b) + c = a + (b + c)Associative Property of Multiplication – The product of a set of numbers is the same no matter how the numbers are grouped. (a x b) x c = a x (b x c)Commutative Property of Addition – The sum of a group of numbers is the same regardless of the order in which the numbers are arranged. a + b = b + aCommutative Property of Multiplication – The product of a group of numbers is the same regardless of the order in which the numbers are arranged. a x b = b x a

Unit 5 Vocab WordsDistributive Property – The sum of two addends multiplied by a number is the sum of the product of each addend and the number. a x (b + c) = (a x b) + (a x c)Exponent – The number of times a number or expression (called the base) is used as a factor of repeated multiplication. Also called the “power”Order of Operations – The rules to be followed when simplifying expressions. Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiply and Divide, Add and Subtract.

7.1 EXPONENTS• Sometimes it is necessary to multiply a number by itself one

or more times. For example, a math problem may require multiplying 3 x 3 or 5 x 5 x 5 x 5. In these situations, instead of writing 3 x 3, you can write 3², or instead of writing 5 x 5 x 5 x 5, 5⁴ means the same thing. The first number is the base. The small, raised number is called the exponent or power. The exponent tells how many times the base should be multiplied by itself.

• Example: 6³ 6 x 6 x 6 (6 x 6 = 36 x 6 = 216)

*Any number raised to the exponent of 1 equals the base number. Example: 4¹ = 4 10¹ = 10 25¹ = 25 *Any number raised to the exponent of 0 equals 1.Example: 4ᴼ = 1 10ᴼ = 1 25ᴼ = 1

7.1 EXPONENTS

7.2 Evaluate Expressions with ExponentsWhen solving an expression that includes an exponent, first find the exponential product. Then solve by following the mathematical signs in the problem.Example 7: Solve: 4² + 9

Example 8: Solve: 2 x 3³

7.3 Basic PropertiesAssociative Property of Addition (a + b) + c = a + (b + c) The sum of a set of numbers is the same no matter how the numbers are grouped. When a problem has a fraction bar, solve the top of the fraction (numerator) and the bottom of the fraction (denominator) separately using the rules for order of operations. (P.E.M.D.A.S) You treat the top and bottom as if they were separate problems. Then simplify the fraction to lowest terms.

8.3 Substituting Numbers in FormulasMany formulas are used in mathematics. There are formulas for finding the surface area of an object, the volume of an object, the rate of speed of a vehicle, etc. When describing the measures used in a formula follow these rules:The variable x² is read x squared. The variable x³ is read x cubed.

1.) The formula for finding the volume of a cube is V = s³. Terrance has a cube that measures 3 inches along each side. What is the volume of Terrance’s cube?
