What is “class?”• Class = a way to describe how much

money or power a person has in society.

Lens #1: Class = Money• This is how we usually think about

class

• INCOME – the amount of money you make per year

or month

• WEALTH – property you own– Examples: Houses, Cars, Boats, Planes,

Stocks/Investments, Businesses, Land

Classes when class = money*

• Upper Class – High income + a lot of wealth

• Middle Class– Average income + average wealth– Average income in the US: $50,000 a year

• Lower Class– Low income + little or no wealth

• Capitalism – an economic system in which the factories, businesses, and banks are owned by individuals called capitalists

• Working Class – people who have to work for someone else

to survive
