Scratch – Simple Programming
Creating Shapes
Unit 3 – Scratch
Unit Overview
http://www.yahmad.co.uk/
Objectives Understand why computer programming scripts are used.
Understand the layout of the Scratch software.
Understand the use of basic motion and repeat commands.
Understand the use of Variables as place holders for information.
Understand what an algorithm is and how it can be used in programming.
Outcomes TimeTask 1 Create shapes in Scratch using basic commands.
Task 2 Create shapes in Scratch using the repeat command.
Task 3 Create a script containing suitable variables.
Task 4 Write an algorithm and create a simple Program to create all of the shapes from the previous tasks

Unit 3 – Scratch
Starter – Algorithms
Write an algorithm to send an email to your teacher.
Unit 3 – Scratch
Task 1 – Create the following shapes
http://www.yahmad.co.uk/
1. Create the following shapes in scratch using basic commands.
2. Print screen (Shapes Worksheets) and annotate your scripts for each shape.

Task 2 – Repeat Command
http://www.yahmad.co.uk/
7 8 10 12
1. Create the following shapes in scratch using the repeat command.
2. Print screen (Shapes Worksheets) and annotate your scripts for each shape.
Unit 3 – Scratch
Task 3 – Variables
http://www.yahmad.co.uk/
• Variables act as “place holders" for data in a computer program.
The answer to each question will be stored in the relevant
variable.
The answer to the question “What shape are you
drawing” will be stored in the shape variable.
Task: Create variable to store the answers from the following questions:
1) What shape are you drawing?2) How many sides does your shape have?3) What is the exterior angle for this shape?4) How many steps would you like to take for each side?
Unit 3 – Scratch
Tasks – Algorithms
http://www.yahmad.co.uk/
• Algorithms are rules/steps/instructions which need to be followed in order to complete a particular task:
• Write an algorithm for the following scenarios:– Getting ready in the morning for school– Making a cup of tea
Unit 3 – Scratch
Tasks 4 – Create a simple Program to create all of the shapes from the previous tasks
http://www.yahmad.co.uk/
1. You program needs to include:
1. Control command to start the script
2. Variables to store information about the shape (shape, sides, angles, steps etc. )
3. Repeat command4. Pen up and Pen down command
2. Write an algorithm for this task.3. You can additional script to you
program.
Unit 3 – Scratch
Plenary – Refer to the Lesson Objectives
http://www.yahmad.co.uk/
Plenary Task (Q&A)Peer assess each other scripts.Discuss the advantages for creating a program to create shapes. Discuss the levels pupils have achieved for this task. Questions: Do you know why a repeat commands is used?Question: What is the purpose of an algorithm? Question: What is the purpose of variables?
