Essential Question – How can I compare renewable to non renewable resources?

Objectives – I can… Analyze the results of my unit 3 pretest

to understand my strengths and weaknesses.

Bell Ringer – Copy the question in orange on your bell ringer sheet. What do you think a renewable

resource is? Can you give an example of one?

Agenda For Today:

Essential Question – How can I compare renewable to non renewable resources?

Objectives – I can… Contrast renewable and nonrenewable energy resources Give examples of renewable and nonrenewable energy

resources.

Bell Ringer – Turn your bell ringer sheet over and write week 10 on the top of your sheet. Copy the question in orange on your bell ringer sheet. What do you think a nonrenewable

resource is?

Agenda For Today:

1. Go over bell ringer

2. Finish Bill Nye Energy Video

3. Renewable and non renewable energy resources notes

4. Summary of notes

5. Nonrenewable and renewable energy

resources concept map.

NONRENEWABLE AND

RENEWABLERESOURCES

NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES

A nonrenewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be re-made or re-grown at a scale comparable to its consumption.

NUCLEAR ENERGYNuclear fission uses uranium to create energy.

Nuclear energy is a nonrenewable resource because once the uranium is

used, it is gone!

COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GASCoal, petroleum, and natural gas are considered nonrenewable

because they can not be replenished in a short period of

time. These are called fossil fuels.

HOW IS COAL MADE ???

HOW ARE OIL AND GAS MADE ???

WHAT WAS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COAL AND OIL/GAS?

HMMMM....

If nonrenewable resources are resources that

cannot be re-made at a scale comparable to its consumption, what are renewable

resources?

RENEWABLE RESOURCES

Renewable resources are natural resources that can be replenished in a short period of time.

● Solar ● Geothermal

● Wind ● Biomass

● Water

SOLAR

Energy from the sun.

Why is energy from the sun renewable?

GEOTHERMAL

Energy from Earth’s heat.

Why is energy from the heat of the Earth renewable?

WINDEnergy from the wind.

Why is energy from

the wind renewable?

BIOMASSEnergy from

burning organic or

living matter.

Why is energy from biomass renewable?

WATER or HYDROELECTRIC

Energy from the flow of

water.

Why is energy of flowing

water renewable?

SUMMARY

What are the differences between

nonrenewable and renewable

resources?

Bell Ringer 10/20/2015

Essential Question – How could renewable and nonrenewable be good or bad?

Objectives – I can… Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of

renewable and nonrenewable energy resources.

Bell Ringer – Copy the question in orange on your bell ringer sheet. What type of resource is coal? Why is it this kind of resource?

Agenda For Today:

1. Go over bell ringer

2. Get into groups and assign resource

3. Assign computers

4. Begin research

Task for today:

Look up your resource on the internet.

Answer the following questions:1. What is this energy source? Where can we find it?

2. How do we harness the energy? (How does it work?)

3. Are there different types or uses of this source? If yes, what are the differences?

4. What are the environmental impacts of your energy source?

5. What are the economic impacts of your energy source? How much does it cost per kWh?

6. What countries currently use this source? What percentage is used in the United States?

7. How is this energy source currently used? For example: At farms, in industry etc. Could this source be used in a family home?

Essential Question – How could renewable and nonrenewable be good or bad?

Objectives – I can… Research and discuss energy resources. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of

renewable and nonrenewable energy resources.

Bell Ringer – Copy the question in orange on your bell ringer sheet. Is using steel beams to support a building

utilizing a renewable resource? Why or why not?

Agenda For Today:

1. Go over bell ringer

2. Go over energy resource research matrix

3. Get computers and complete the matrix.

4. If time permits start sharing research with other groups.

Your Task

Compete all questions in your matrix that apply to your energy resource.

Make sure to include detail, because you WILL be sharing your information with your group members.
